MOUNT STERLING - George Rogers Clark coach Steven Collins will have to wait at least another week to get his first win as coach of the Cardinals. Clark rallied from a 20-3 deficit, but host Montgomery County spoiled Collins' return to Mount Sterling and remained undefeated on the season with a 34-23 triumph over the Cardinals Friday night at Cunningham Field. Collins spent the last two seasons as offensive coordinator with the Indians before taking over as coach of the Cardinals last winter and remains close friends with Montgomery County coach Dan Gooch.

The George Rogers Clark boys tennis team suffered a 5-0 loss to rival Montgomery County Tuesday afternoon at the Winchester Country Club. Clark’s Kristopher Waller, above, got off a back-hand shot during a doubles match. Results were as follows: Singles — Austin Colliver defeated Cameron Colvard 2-6, 7-6(2) 6-2 — Forest Thornberry defeated Ian Rowe 6-2, 6-0 Doubles — Ben Manning and Max Baker defeated Chris Griffith and Kristopher Waller 6-2, 6-4 — Matt Razor and Clint Bryant defeated John Rupard and Christian Colvard 7-6(5)

FALMOUTH — Although it’s not an easy task, Montgomery County proved beating a team four times in one season can be accomplished. The Lady Indians captured their second 10th Region title in three years with a 4-0 victory over defending champion George Rogers Clark Wednesday night at Pendleton County High School. Montgomery County will carry a 10-game winning streak into next week's state tournament at Jack Fisher Park in Owensboro. Unlike the previous meeting between the two teams in last week's 40th District final that went eight innings, Montgomery County created adequate spacing between the two rivals with four runs in the first inning.

East Jessamine football lost its second game in a row on Friday night as it came a bit short against Montgomery County 28-23. After falling behind 15-0, East got back in the game thanks to a 31-yard touchdown pass from Ronnie Carson to Hayden Tatman. Tyler Edmundson, who scored twice on the night, set East up to tie the game with a 1-yard touchdown followed by a two-point conversion run by Carson to tie the game 15-15 with 3:26 remaining in the first half. Montgomery wasn't able to break up the tie until the final minute of the third quarter as the Indians scored on a 37-yard pass to take a 22-15 lead.

George Rogers Clark's reign as the best team in the 40th District is over. Neighboring Montgomery County ended the Cardinals' seven-year run as district champions with a 66-42 rout of Clark Wednesday night at Norton Gymnasium. Both teams will advance to next week's 10th Region Tournament at Mason County High School. Although Clark scored the first basket and just trailed 13-9 at the end of the first quarter, the Indians pulled away in the second frame, outscoring the Cards 26-11 to build a 39-20 advantage at the break.

PARIS - George Rogers Clark is already in postseason form. The Cardinals concluded a successful run in the 40th District Tournament with a 55-38 victory over Montgomery County Thursday night at Bourbon County High School, giving Clark its seventh consecutive district title. The border rivals split two games during the regular season, but Clark has won the last two contests, including the district finale. Both teams advance to next week's 10th Region Tournament at the MCHS Arena in Mount Sterling.

George Rogers Clark gave everything it had against rival Montgomery County, but came up short in a 3-2 loss to the Lady Indians Thursday in Mount Sterling. Montgomery County scored a run in the sixth inning that broke a 2-2 deadlock for the final margin. Clark scored a run in the first and tacked on another score in the fourth, but the Lady Indians responded each time to hold off the Lady Cards. Clark third baseman Kolbi Mitchell paced the Lady Cards with two of their three hits.

George Rogers Clark gained revenge on Montgomery County and kept its winning streak intact. The Cardinals captured their 15th straight victory with a 52-35 triumph over the Indians in front of a packed house Friday night at Norton Gymnasium. Montgomery County defeated Clark 58-56 in the first meeting between the two teams on Dec. 9 at the MCHS arena in Mount Sterling. The two teams tied for first in the 40th District and a coin flip will be used to determine the No. 1 seed in the postseason tournament.

The George Rogers Clark baseball team spoiled rival Montgomery County's bid for a perfect finish in the 40th District with an exciting 2-1 triumph over the Indians Tuesday at Cardinal Field. The Indians (15-5) clinched the top seed for the postseason tournament with a 3-2 victory over Bourbon County Monday at Whitaker Field in Mount Sterling but failed to complete a regular-season sweep of the Cardinals after claiming the top seed less than 24 hours earlier. The Cardinals, who split two games with Montgomery and Bourbon, likely will be a second seed and will take on the Colonels when the postseason begins in three weeks.

A Montgomery County man was killed Friday evening on a Clark County road when a tree fell on him after he tried to clear a limb downed by heavy winds. Michael Martin, 30, got out of his car on Donaldson Road to move the fallen limb, and the tree it was attached to fell on him, said Clark County Sheriff Berl Perdue Jr. Perdue said he was called to the scene at about 7 p.m. Clark County Coroner Robert Gayheart said Martin died from trauma at the scene. His family had been notified.

It was one and done for the George Rogers Clark baseball and softball teams in the opening round of the 40th District Tournament Monday night. The Cardinals nearly overcame a five-run deficit with three runs in the last three innings, but it wasn't enough in a 6-3 setback to Bourbon County in a rematch of last year's district final at Whitaker Field in Mount Sterling. The Colonels move on to tonight's finals and will take top-seeded Montgomery County, which rolled to an 11-1 victory in five innings over Paris in the first game of a doubleheader.

The George Rogers Clark softball team dropped a 7-4 setback to Montgomery County Thursday night in Mount Sterling. Clark led 2-1 going into the third inning, but the Lady Indians went ahead for good with a three-run outburst in the third inning. Clark will be the No. 3 seed in the district and will take on the Lady Indians to open the postseason on May 20 at Bourbon County High School. The two teams split the two games, with Clark winning 4-1 on April 25 at Cardinal Heights. Clark collected seven hits, led by Sydney Anderson with a single and a double.

The George Rogers Clark baseball team celebrated Senior Night with an 11-3 win over Paris Thursday at Cardinal Field. The Cardinals secured a No. 2 seed for the district tournament and will take on Bourbon County when the tournament begins on May 20 at Montgomery County. The Indians are the No. 1 seed and will play the Greyhounds. The Cards will take on third seeded Bourbon County to open the postseason and defense of their 40th District title. Clark senior Wes Caddell drove in a pair of runs in the first inning with a bloop single to right, while Ryan Frye connected on his first career home run with a two-run shot over the left-field fence in the third inning.

Two singles players and one doubles entry from George Rogers Clark advanced past the second round of the regional tennis tournament over the weekend. Ian Rowe will face Jacob Markley from Harrison County, while Laz Wilkerson will play the top seed from Maysville St. Patrick Tuesday at Fort Thomas Highlands High School. The doubles tandem of Wes Conkwright and Brooks Harrison, the top seed in the region, will compete in the semifinals against a doubles pair from Highlands. Rowe received a bye in the opening round and defeated Max Freyberger (6-3, 6-2)

Danville scored twice in the top of the fifth inning to take the lead for good and the Admiral went on to beat Whitefield Academy 3-2 in the All “A” Classic quarterfinals at Whitaker Bank Park in Lexington. The Admirals play Bethlehem at 10:30 a.m. today in the semifinals. The winner plays the winner of Newport Central Catholic in today's 1 p.m. final. Nick Serey got the complete-game win, striking out 11, walking one and scattering four hits. Mason Stamm and John Roney had Danville's only hits.

The George Rogers Clark baseball team suffered its first district loss of the season with a 1-0 setback at Montgomery County Monday. The loss snapped the Cardinals' five-game winning streak, while the Indians notched their sixth consecutive win in their district opener. Clark opened the district schedule with wins at Paris and Bourbon County last week. The two teams battled to a scoreless tie through the first six innings. Montgomery (10-3) scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning on Clay Barton's RBI single that scored Jordan Nester, who opened the inning with a single.

LEXINGTON - It's been nearly two decades - 18 years to be exact - since Montgomery County made an appearance on the state's biggest stage. In between the Indians' first appearance in the KHSAA¿Sweet Sixteen in 1995 until Thursday, folks in neighboring Mount Sterling have been yearning for a return to Rupp and watched as 10th Region rivals George Rogers Clark High School and Mason County battled for regional supremacy. Behind stars such as Chris Lofton and Darius Miller, the Royals won state championships in 2003 and 2008, while the Cardinals with a cast of players featuring Preston Knowles, Vinny Zollo, Robbie Stenzel and others, claimed three of the past five region titles and won their first-round games in 2007 and each of the past two years before bowing out in the state quarterfinals.

LEXINGTON - Montgomery County advanced to the state semifinals for the first time in program history Friday night, but it wasn't easy. Mr. Basketball candidate Omar Prewitt, battling foul trouble for most of the game, was limited to 11 points on three-of-11 shooting, but teammate Bryan Wallace stepped up and led the Indians past John Hardin 66-57 in the quarterfinals of the Boys Sweet Sixteen at Rupp¿Arena. Wallace scored a game-high 21 points, as Montgomery County fought back from a nine-point first half deficit by going on a 16-0 run that spanned from the end of the second quarter to the beginning of the third frame.
