STANFORD - Up to 40 Fort Logan High School students will have new chances to boost their employability and job experience, thanks to a $135,000 grant from the Bluegrass Workforce Investment Board. Fort Logan Principal Scott Montgomery said the grant he applied for, which was awarded June 20, is aimed at helping low-income students improve their numeracy, literacy and job skills. "The money is not earmarked as much as a lot of grants are, so they do give you some leeway there so you can help it to fit your program," Montgomery said.

The Danville boys allowed only two shots but saw their five-game winning streak end with a 1-0 loss to Montgomery County Thursday at Mount Sterling. Montgomery (3-3-1) was outshot 13-2 by Danville (7-2) but pushed across the game's only goal in the 72nd minute. "I'm not sure if we deserved to win, but we did outplay our opponent pretty well," Danville coach Gary Reynolds said. "I felt like we controlled the ball very well the first and most of the second half. " Reynolds said the Admirals' attack lacked depth, the shooters were unable to find the net and defenders allowed too many long balls to bounce over their heads.

MOUNT STERLING - Mason County coach Chris O'Hearn isn't big on having the homecourt advantage in the postseason. "I don't buy it," he said. "The team that's playing the best at the end of the year usually wins. " It was his Royals who were on top of their game when it counted. Playing away from home in the 10th Region Tournament for the first time since 1969, the Royals captured their fifth title in seven years in unfamiliar territory and defeated the host school for a ticket to next week's Sweet Sixteen with an 82-61 win over Montgomery County Wednesday night at the MCHS Arena.
