As the UK Hoops team crowded around the flat-screen television in Coach Matthew Mitchell's basement, they were all handed blank printable brackets so they could fill in the names of their mystery opponents. A hush fell over everyone as the ESPN Selection Show started, with analysts unveiling the first bracket. It was when the second bracket was revealed that guard Jennifer O'Neill stopped filling hers out. The Bronx, N.Y. native saw the “Queens” location pop up, and then the name of her team, the second-seeded Wildcats.

Brandewie completes Navy training Navy Seaman Apprentice Ian M. Navy Deandre Routt of Lexington, formerly of Danville, graduated Sept. 28 from Great Lakes Naval Base's recruit training command in North Chicago, Ill. He entered the Navy on Aug. 1. He currently is in training at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Fla. He is the son of John and Latausha Routt of Lexington and great-grandson of Albert and Loretta Taylor of Danville.

Andrew M. Forbes gradauted U.S. Navy basic training earlier this month. A West Jessamine High School and BCTC graduate, Forbes completed his training at Great Lakes, Ill. During his eight weeks of training, Forbes learned seamanship, water survival, extensive shipboard damage control, firefighting and anti-terrorism. His company made it into the hall of fame due to team excellence in all areas of training. Forbes graduated as an “honor grad” with the rank of E-3. He is now attending cryptology intelligence school in Pensacola, Fla. His sister, Brittany, a senior at the University of Kentucky; and his parents, Andrew and June Forbes, attended his graduation.

Chaplain Kevin L. Dean enlisted in the Navy Reserve in 1989. He served for 14 years as a Religious Program Specialist (E-6) assigned to various Marine Corps units and was mobilized to the 2d Marine Aircraft Wing in support of Operation Desert Storm. In 2003, Dean was commissioned into the US Navy Chaplain Corps and was promoted to lieutenant, junior grade (O-2). In 2005, he accompanied Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 24 (Seabees) to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Dean was mobilized for 14 months in 2009 as the rear echelon chaplain for the II Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group in Camp Lejeune, N.C., where he served 6,000 marines and sailors, and their families.

Clinton Roberts, grandson of Clint and Margaret Fisher of Danville, joined the U.S. Navy as a Seabee right after graduating high school in Frankfort in 2010. Since then, he's been to Chicago, Afghanistan and Spain. But it was in Southern California where Roberts and his team provided a miraculous saving hand for a woman and her two daughters. In January, a semi-truck traveling down a California road and loaded with gravel hit a BMW from the rear before plowing through a bridge railing, falling 100 feet and bursting into flames.

Zach Hester can finally relax. The long, stressful task of getting his appointment to the United States Naval Academy is complete. The Boyle County senior accepted his appointment to Navy on Wednesday, ending months of interviews, medical tests and having to essentially divulge his whole life for the honor of going to college at one of the best schools in the world and getting to play football for the Midshipmen. “It's definitely a relief. I can kind of exhale and smile because at the Academy, it is a lot to do with the application,” Hester said during a ceremony at Boyle.

A Winchester sailor died during a training exercise Thursday with the Navy off the coast of North Carolina. Petty Officer Second Class Taylor Gallant, 22, was assigned to the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 12 on board the Canadian navy ship HMCS Summerside, according to a news release from the Navy Expeditionary Combat Command public affairs office. He was transported to Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune and was pronounced dead on arrival. John Gay, public affairs officer for NECC, said Gallant's death is under investigation, as the NECC and the Naval Safety Center determine exactly what went wrong.
