BARDSTOWN - A Lancaster man was killed Saturday when he lost control of his car.  According to Nelson County Deputy Coroner Brian Papenfuss, the driver, Donald Foster, 61, was unable to navigate a turn, which resulted in the car rolling over.  Police reports say the crasg occurred on Balltown Road in Nelson County and that Foster crossed the center line, striking an embankment. He was pronounced dead at the scene.  A passenger in the car, William Thomas Metcalf, 51, of Bardstown, had to be extricated from the vehicle and was flown to the University of Louisville hospital with unknown injuries but was released the following day. It is unknown if the two men were wearing seat belts.

Tyler Sebastian was a double short of the cycle Saturday, going 4-for-5 with a stolen base to help Danville to a 10-7 win at Nelson County. Hunter May drilled a two-run home run in the first inning, went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs. Max Meckes was 3-for-5 with a double and Dowell Harmon was 2-for-3 as Danville (6-2) led 7-1 after two innings. Rob Caudill worked the first two innings, giving up a run on one hit with three strikeouts, to pick up the win. Danville was ahead 9-2 when Nelson scored four runs (two unearned)

The Danville baseball team improved to 14-6 on Saturday after sweeping two home games from Nelson County and Bullitt Central. The Admirals beat Nelson County 6-4 in the first game, then shut out Bullitt 7-0 in the second for their third straight win and eighth in nine games. In the second game, Ben Mahan went four innings with five strikeouts and a walk to pick up the win. Kyle Lange worked the final three innings and struck out one with no walks. J.B. Williams was 1-for-1 with an RBI, walked three times and scored three times.

HARRODSBURG - In a game dominated by defense, Mercer County used two interceptions in the fourth quarter to secure a 48-28 win over pass-happy Nelson County on Friday night. The game started about 45 minutes late because of a lightning delay - and host Mercer's offense also started slow. “We just were not focused. Maybe it was all the commotion during the delay,” Mercer coach Chris Pardue said. “But this group does not quit. We felt we let two games get away against Madison Central and Lexington Catholic.

Boyle County fell behind 7-0 after the first two innings Tuesday and could not recover in a 10-5 loss to visiting Nelson County. "Give Nelson County credit. They came out on fire and hit it around those first couple innings," Boyle coach Chris LeMonds said. Kendra Ross hit her first home run of the season and had two hits. Emily Donlon also had two hits each to lead Boyle, and Tara Allen, Molly Selby, Hayley Hellyer and Hailey Glasscock each had a hit. Cheyenne Brumbaugh struck out two and walked four over 3 1/3 innings to take the loss, Lindsey Edwards came on in relief and gave up one run in 2 2/3 innings.

HARRODSBURG - The Mercer County girls soccer team is looking for its fourth coach in the last seven years. In a story on its website Friday, The Kentucky Standard announced that Paul Brooks, who led Mercer to its best season ever last year, has been hired as the girls coach at the new Thomas Nelson High School in Bardstown. “I knew a couple of days ago that he was offered the job and more than likely going to take it,”¿Mercer athletics director Jaziel Guerra said Friday night.

Mercer County's Ally Perrin shot 44 for the low score in her team's match with Nelson County on Tuesday at Harrodsburg. Perrin edged Nelson's Morgan Stine by one stroke at Bright Leaf Golf Course. HODGENVILLE - Danville's Evan Hester and David Harlan each won three of four matches to lead the Admirals Saturday in a tournament at LaRue County. Hester's only loss in the 189-pound class was to a North Hardin wrestler who pinned him with 30 seconds left in the match. Harlan won once by decision, once by pin and once by forfeit at 130 pounds. Brooks Evans won two matches but lost a 12-11 decision to LaRue's Michael Bailey. "Even that loss shows the potential Brooks has," Danville coach Jeff Selby said.

The Colts (1-1) will face the the Bruins (1-0) at 7:15 p.m. in the  Farmer's National Bank 12th Region Showcase at Mercer County. West is coming off a 99-82 win over Franklin County, and Central Hardin defeated Nelson County 73-35.

Special to the Sun Pvt. William Greathouse was just a teenager when he answered Kentucky Gov. Isaac Shelby's call to arms against the British in the United States' second war for independence. Greathouse, who lived from 1794 to 1876, will be in the spotlight at the 6:30 p.m. Oct. 11 Second Thursday program at the Bluegrass Heritage Museum. His life will be portrayed by Harry Smith of Cynthiana, a Kentucky Chautauqua presenter. Greathouse was among more than 25,000 Kentucky men serving as regulars, militia and volunteers in the War of 1812.

Donald Wayne “Blue” Foster, 61, of Gilberts Creek Road, Garrard County, passed away Saturday, Sept. 22, in Nelson County as a result of an automobile accident.   Born Monday, March 19, 1951, in Lincoln County, Donald was a son of the late George Elbert “Blue” Foster.  He was a US Marine Corps veteran, lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and an 11-year member of the American Legion.  Donald had a love for Harley-Davidson motorcycles and antique cars. He was also preceded in death by a brother, George Elbert “Pete” Foster.

K.K. Davis struck out eight and allowed just three hits Monday as Boyle County (2-2) routed visiting Nelson County 11-1 at Rebel Stadium. Hannah Chadwell, Davis and Mary Fyfe each drove in two runs and Heather Hasty and Lauren Richard each had an RBI for Boyle (2-2). The Rebels led 3-1 before plating six runs in the bottom of the fourth to break the game open. The Rebels then had two runs in the fifth to make it a run-rule game. Danielle Mason had a double for the Rebels. Lincoln County 14, Lexington Christian 6 -  At Lexington, Gabby Gabriel struck out 14 as the Patriots won at Lexington Christian.

In this column in October of last year was a brief comment about the insanity of the configurations of Kentucky's congressional districts. Now, with redistricting being imminent and the early introduction of a redistricting plan that has been formulated by a Kentucky House Democratic majority, the role that pure unadulterated politics plays in the process becomes apparent. And when the Republican controlled Senate gets its hands on the proposal, there can be little doubt that the districts will be changed to favor Republican officeholders and candidates.

HARRODSBURG - Down by 13 points in the first half, the Mercer County girls trimmed that lead by halftime, then dominated Nelson County in the second half Wednesday night to down the Cardinals 55-43 in the quarterfinals of the Harrodsburg/Mercer Tourism Titan Christmas Clash. Savannah Taylor and Tabby Shewmaker each had double-doubles for the Titans (8-2), who play Anderson County in tonight's semifinals. Taylor had 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Shewmaker scored 12 points and grabbed 10 boards as each team had 32 rebounds.
