The Burgin girls may not have been familiar with their surroundings this weekend, but they were exactly where they wanted to be. The Bulldogs were in uncharted territory at the Boyle County Invitational, where they played a couple of teams that are a cut above most of those on their schedule, and they left satisfied both with the way they matched up with those teams and with what they believe that will do for them down the road. Burgin had the best record of any of the four area volleyball teams in the eight-team event at Centre College, going 3-0 in its pool before being knocked out by Nelson County in a semifinal Saturday.

The East Jessamine girls didn't were missing their floor general Tuesday night. That combined with poor shooting and low rebound totals dropped the Jaguars on the road against Nelson County to open the season, 56-36. Ashley Willoughby, junior point guard, was scratched from the lineup due to illness, Coach Ralph Sallee said. "We found out the day before Ashley wasn't going to be there," he said. "And we weren't able to make a quick adjustments. " The Jaguars were in the game through the first half, but the Cardinals pulled away in the third quarter, in large part due to East's inability to get shots to fall in. The team was 16-for-49 shooting on the night.
