S&G Sanitation closed for New Year's Day S&G Sanitation will be closed Tuesday for New Year's Day. Those with Tuesday and Friday collection will have Friday collection only. Those with Tuesday collection will have collecition on Monday. Normal schedules will resume Wednesday. Correction An article in Friday's Winchester Sun incorrectly stated that State Rep. Donna Mayfield is in favor of cutting cost of living adjustments as part of state pension reform. Mayfield is not in favor of such a measure.

Was it so long ago that a holiday meant a day of relaxation and decompression from a hectic work life? It seems such a short time ago that Memorial Day or Thanksgiving Day was a time of leisure, possibly filled with a parade or some civic activity that bore special meaning to that particular day. There was once a time when a holiday meant something more than simply posing as an excuse for retailers to have “special” sales. With the exception of Christmas, it appears there is not another single holiday during the year that is not touted as a sale day. Many years ago, Walmart made its debut in Winchester in the Shopper's Village shopping center.

Look for the TV Spotlight in Wednesday's paper. The TV Spotlight normally runs on Friday, but due to the New Year's Day holiday, The Advocate-Messenger will be closed Friday and will not publish a paper that day.

Holiday closings Most local, state and federal government offices and businesses will be closed Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Confirmed county-by county closings follow: Boyle County Danville city hall will be closed Monday and Tuesday for Christmas. Boyle County courthouse and the county recycling center will be closed Monday and Tuesday; the animal control office will be closed Saturday through Tuesday; solid waste convenience centers will close after noon Monday and all day Tuesday.

Art League to meet Lincoln County Art League will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at 6 p.m. at the Lincoln County Tourism office. We will be discussing the plans for 2009. A popular song says, "It's the most wonderful time of the year. " But for many people, the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day aren't wonderful - they're wildly hectic, frustrating and expensive.The holidays don't have to be a hassle. You can take steps now to make them much merrier. Think about past holidays and ask yourself, "What was fun and memorable? What could I do differently to make the holidays happier this year?" Here are some ideas: Take care of yourself. Eat right, don't drink to excess and get plenty of sleep and exercise.

Zoey Cheyenne McArter was the first baby born in Lincoln County in 2009, arriving at 2:06 p.m. on New Year's Day. Zoey weighed 6.52 pounds and was 19 inches long when she was delivered by Dr. James Miller at Ephraim McDowell Fort Logan Hospital. Parents Delaney and Erick McArter of Danville were effusive in their praise for their doctor, the staff and the facility. "People here are awesome! The nurses and the staff are so nice," said Zoey's mom Delaney. When asked why they came from Danville to Stanford for the delivery, Delaney McArter said, "Dr. Miller is our doctor and he's great, and this place is beautiful.
