Rather than simply hanging out, the Lincoln County High School girls basketball team decided to help out. The state tournament hadn't gone quite the way players hoped it would, but what the Patriots did after they lost last week at the Girls Sweet Sixteen generated enough good memories and goodwill to make their trip much more than a typical one-and-done experience. The Lincoln players rallied around a team that was short on fan support, throwing their support behind Notre Dame during its unexpected run to the state finals in Bowling Green.

LEXINGTON - Kentucky picked up another verbal commitment from an offensive lineman Monday. Kane Hannaford of Palmetto, Fla., picked Kentucky over North Carolina State and South Florida. The 6-6, 335-pound Hannaford is the fifth high school offensive lineman to indicate he will sign with the Wildcats next month. Louisville Trinity quarterback Brian Brohm is also scheduled to make his college choice public this afternoon. He has listed Louisville, Kentucky, Notre Dame and Tennessee as his final four choices for several weeks.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Darius Miller has never played a game at Notre Dame, but he's been here plenty of times. "I have tons of family in South Bend," the Kentucky freshman said. "My dad has a lot of family there. We used to go there at least once a year. I've never been there to play a game, but I have certainly been to South Bend. " Miller says he expects to have several family members and friends at tonight's National Invitation Tournament game. His father and Patrick Patterson's father drove together to Omaha for Monday's game and will be here along with others.

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (AP) - A man shot his wife at her Ohio elementary school Thursday, but no children were injured, police said. The condition of the woman, who is a teacher at the school, was not immediately known, and the shooter escaped. Authorities said they were in the process of trying to apprehend the man, but did not elaborate. The shooting happened at Notre Dame Elementary in Portsmouth, a community in southern Ohio near the Kentucky border. Nearby schools were placed on lockdown, said Superintendent Jan Broughton, who oversees the community's public schools.

Scott C. Schurz Jr. of Schurz Communications Inc. in South Bend, Ind., will become assistant publisher of The Advocate-Messenger in January. Schurz, 35, will be responsible for the operation of all phases of the newspaper through effective team leadership of human resources, sales, distribution, newsroom production and financial management. He will report directly to Advocate publisher Mary Schurz. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Ind., Scott C. Schurz Jr. holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in American studies and a Master of Business Administration degree.

The Boyle County girls finished second in their first event of the season, the Mason County Invitational, their first event of the season, on Thursday at Maysville. Rachel Pingleton shot 77 to lead Boyle, which had a four-person score of 327 in the tournament at Maysville Country Club. “The varsity team not only continued the stellar play of last season, but improved their previous team best by 13 strokes,” Boyle co-coach Sandy Waters said. The Rebels finished 28 strokes behind team champion Sacred Heart, and they were six strokes ahead of third-place Notre Dame in the 16-team event.

EDGEWOOD - A successful season came to an end for the George Rogers Clark girls soccer team. The Lady Cardinals dropped a 3-0 setback to highly-touted Notre Dame in the sub-section 6 finals at Dixie Heights, ending a fun run for Clark, which included a district championship, a regional title and a berth in the state tournament. The Pandas (21-3) advance to the state quarterfinals and will take on Dixie Heights Thursday night. The Lady Colonels ousted East Carter, 1-0 on Tuesday night.

A portion of Kentucky's basketball schedule has been set. The slate, released by the school on Tuesday, features eight games at Rupp¿Arena and games against Maryland and Duke on neutral sites. The defending national champion Wildcats open the season against Maryland in the Barclays Center on Nov. 9 in Brooklyn, N.Y. and will take on Duke four days later on Nov. 13 at the Georgia Dome in the Champions Classic. The Wildcats will play Notre Dame in the SEC-Big East Challenge on Nov. 29 in South Bend.
