Dear Editor, I have read many of Mr. M. Wendell Anderson's letters in this opinion column. After reading his letter on Dec. 15, I felt I must speak out. I also disagree with and am tired of some of the political correctness of the Obama administration. I hate being threatened by any type of terrorism. I also believe we should use almost all of our military power to wipe out this enemy and threat to the United States of America. I would not lose any sleep if all terrorists were wiped off the face of the earth by conventional warfare.

By Robert Dodge, M.D. This week marks the 64th anniversary of the atomic bombs dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, August 6 and 9, respectively, killing a quarter of a million people. For two generations since these horrific nuclear explosions, mankind has lived both in fear and with a thin, false sense of security that these weapons make us safe. We have allowed massive global nuclear arsenals to build to a point of placing the survival of the planet itself in peril.

Dear Editor, Iran seems to be testing the world with its nuclear program. Iran says it has nuclear rights. Sanctions and world condemnation has had little effect and done nothing to deter Iran from its nuclear weapons quest. Iran has backed the West into a corner. We are running out of options to deal with this growing menace. A military strike would not be in our best interest. Such a move would likely cause a profound interruption in the world oil flow, which would cause oil prices to skyrocket overnight to astronomical prices far beyond anything we've seen yet. That would plunge this country and most of the world into deeper economic crisis.

It's a good idea not to call anything unacceptable that you aren't prepared to prevent, and, of course, the president was not prepared to prevent the nuclear test. The president concentrated so hard on the two members of his infamous "axis of evil" that didn't have nuclear weapons that he neglected the one that does. North Korea announced that it would test a nuclear weapon, and now it has done so. I'm sure the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Il, said, "Woe is me" when he heard such words as "provocative" and "unacceptable" tossed at him as if words were weapons.

Dear Editor: Frank Durham's letter shows how uninformed he is about the facts. If Bush lied, then so did the following: Sept. 4, 2002: "If we wait for the (Iraq) danger to become clear, it could be too late. " - Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del. "Every day Saddam remains in power with chemical weapons, biological weapons, and the development of nuclear weapons is a day of danger for the United States. " - Sen. Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn. Sept. 19, 2002: "We begin with the common belief that Saddam Hussein is a tyrant and a threat to the peace and stability of the region.

I finally had my blood pressure under control until I read Roger Bowman's recent letter to the editor. I served 21 years in the Air Force, 13 years of which we were at war under Democratic presidents. I have great respect for the office of president. I would never, as Mr. Bowman did, call the president an idiot, even when he is. Of course, Mr. Bowman was referring to G.W. Bush. The highest responsibility of any president is to protect the American people as Roosevelt and Truman, both Democrats, did during World War II. They used the full force of American power to end the war. We could end the Afghan war in a few days if our current president was willing to do that.

My next door neighbor had a bomb shelter. I don't know if it's still there, but I remember how cool I thought it was that there was this door in the side of the hill in his backyard. We would step down into the dark, damp closet-like room and sit on the wooden benches his father had propped up on some loose concrete blocks left over from the shelter's construction. We used it as headquarters for our army, as a clubhouse for our gang (which back then meant something in the spirit of Little Rascals)

NASHVILLE (BP) ? Reaction was mixed among the religious community after the world learned Friday that President Obama had won the Nobel Peace Prize. Obama and much of the world community were surprised by the announcement, yet the Norwegian Nobel Committee voiced no apprehensions about the future of his presidency but commended him on what has been achieved so far in his nine-month presidency "for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples," including how the president has "powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations.
