In January, I wrote an article on the government's role in supporting basic science, invention and innovation. In the opening paragraph of that article I said: “The Obama administration claims the government can 'create jobs' through technology, particularly green technology. The president argues that the technology is there and all it needs is a 'nudge' from the government. He does not explain why private interest does not do the 'nudging' if that is in fact the case. Clearly, the private sector does not believe these technologies are ready for prime time.” The Solyndra bankruptcy scandal is a textbook example of what is wrong with these policies.

Just as I was getting my thoughts organized for a letter to the editor, another writer, Shirley Culton, of Danville, pre-empted me. I agree with this writer 100 percent. The president is the one not to be trusted, not Mitt Romney. The president is the one who has his personal life sealed. We are not even sure he is an American citizen. Just one more thing - the Obama administration will apparently do anything to get re-elected, they refuse to enforce the duly constituted laws requiring deportation of illegal aliens, and they actively oppose states that try to enforce these laws.

The fate and direction of the country may be in the hands of independent voters in the upcoming 2012 presidential election, according  to U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell. The longest sitting senator in Kentucky's history paid a visit to community leaders, business owners and elected officials at the monthly Jessamine County Chamber of Commerce meeting Thursday afternoon. Despite being a private event, there were tables set for 150 people inside the hangar on the property of R.J. Corman Railroad Group off U.S. 27. McConnell arrived a little before noon and had lunch provided by Zaxby's while mingling with guests.

Dear Editor, There are some people, mostly left-wingers, who will never be able to give President Bush credit under any circumstance, not even if he found a cure for ignorance. My first inclination was to ignore Roger Bowman's most recent letter. However, after several sleepless nights, I have to respond. Mr. Bowman wants Republicans to shut up about the Obama administration. The party of the disloyal opposition spent eight years lambasting President Bush and failed to give him credit for anything - not even for keeping us safe for 71/2 years after 9/11.

At some time we all have to grow up and accept responsibility for our own actions. The same is true for those who lead our country. A perfect example is a recent letter from Roger Bowman who, like the president, continues to blame George W. Bush for all of the problems that exist in our country. I remind Mr. Bowman that Obama has been president for almost three years. The socialist Democratic Party was in charge of both houses of Congress for the last two years of the Bush administration, and except for the last six months, all of the Obama administration.

Record high gas prices are straining Kentuckians’ wallets, squeezing family budgets, and putting pressure on struggling businesses. Beyond the strain on the family budget, these high fuel costs pose a mortal threat to the economic rebound our country needs. High gas prices are a serious concern — and Kentuckians want solutions. Unfortunately, the answers coming from the Obama Administration and liberal Democrats in Washington are not serious. Their latest proposal is to raise taxes on American energy production.

In response to Kathleen Parker’s recent column, it is correct only as far as it goes. She would serve her readers to complete the story. Let me provide you some data from the website “whitehouse.gov/OMB,” which is likely credible. President Bush’s final year in office was 2008, and the deficit was $458.5 billion. President Obama’s first year in office was 2009 where the deficit was $1.4 trillion, and I believe she and I could agree that some of that amount is the responsibility of President Bush.

Since the Obama administration has stated many times that it has “saved” or “created” millions of jobs as a result of its policies, I think it's time the Republicans start putting out to the voting public that it is them who in fact are “saving” jobs by being the “obstructionists.” The more of Obama's disastrous policies they can block, the better off we will be. The Republicans need to do a better job of conveying to the public how...

Add David Brooks to the list of pundits who believe the Oct. 11 vice-presidential debate at Centre College will be good political theater starring two compelling candidates. The columnist and author thinks it might actually be meaningful as well. Brooks said both candidates will fulfill their role as surrogate attack dogs by “aiming above” their opponent to take shots at the men running for president. However, the debate also should present an opportunity for Paul Ryan in particular to provide some substance and clarify what he believes.

The “Occupy Wall Street” protests are spreading, and they've reached Lexington. Hundreds of people across the country have been gathering in front of banks and financial centers to protest … er, um, something. That's the problem; no one really knows exactly what they are protesting. Even The Associated Press profiled them and came to the conclusion that they don't really know what it is they are angry about - just that they are angry. I stopped by the protest in Lexington on its first day. I talked to four different people, and none of them could articulate exactly what they wanted to see accomplished.

What began as a simple, straightforward question on Wednesday concerning the White House's secret drone program eventually turned into the boldest stance taken by any lawmaker - whether from Washington or Frankfort - in a long time. After failing to get clear assurances from the Obama administration that it would not use drones to target Americans on U.S. soil without due process or a trial, Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul took to the floor of the United States Senate at 11:47 a.m. and did not yield it back until after midnight.

Have you heard the one about the analysts who were bullied by a powerful president to change their findings that a proposed clean water regulation by the federal government would cost 7,000 American coal miners their jobs? The punch line: The firms employing the analysts who refused to “soften” their numbers have been told “the contract would not be renewed,” according to testimony offered during a congressional hearing in Washington by Steve Gardner, president of ECSI, a Kentucky consulting firm and one of the project's subcontractors.
