STANFORD - Law enforcement officers in Lincoln County have been dealing with everything from active shooters and bomb threats to kidnappings and murders over the past week, but fortunately, it's all taking place in virtual reality. Lincoln County Deputy Sheriff and weapons expert Sim Thacker has been putting other law enforcement officers into all kinds of difficult situations using a $150,000 simulation system on loan from the Kentucky Association of Counties. "It's basically a use-of-force trainer," Thacker said.

The Jessamine County Sheriff's Office has received clean audits of its 2011 tax and fee accounts. The audits, performed by the Kentucky Auditor of Public Accounts, found no instances of noncompliance, but noted two deficiencies in the fee account that are considered significant but not “material weaknesses.” The deficiencies do not signify wrongdoing, said Stephenie Steitzer, communications director for the state auditor. “It's not something that really raises eyebrows,” she said.

OnOct. 19, 2012, Nicholasville police officer John Paul Rainey was on patrol in the Miles Road area when he spotted a “suspicious subject.” During the course of the investigation, Rainey was shot in the back, but fortunately for him, he was wearing his ballistic vest, which saved him from serious injury or even death. Rainey was recognized during the Nicholasville City Commission meeting Monday by the manufacturer of the vest, Safariland and American Body Armor. “There is one thing that we are all grateful for tonight, and this is John Paul is with us,” police chief Barry Waldrop said.

HARRODSBURG - During the regular meeting of the Mercer County Board of Education Thursday, the board approved the hiring of Tim Eaton from the Kentucky School Board Association to act as the public hearing officer for the Local Planning Committee process. On Jan. 24, the board approved a plan, which ultimately will close Mercer County Intermediate School, formerly Harrodsburg High School. That plan was presented to the local planning committee, which approved it and sent it to the Kentucky Department of Education.

Officers have been named for Wilderness Trace Community Foundation. Stephen A. Dexter will serve as chairman. He is an attorney and shareholder with the law firm of Sheehan, Barnett, Dean, Pennington, Little and Dexter P.S.C. He is a Danville native and graduated in 2000 from Danville High School before receiving his Bachelor of Arts in government and English from Centre College in 2004. Dexter earned his Juris Doctorate at the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law in 2008, where he was a member of the Brandeis Law Journal.
