Many of our seasonal decorations represent a great deal of time, money and fond memories. They deserve proper care and storage and should be cleaned and organized each year in a way that will not only preserve them but also have them ready to go at their next use. I found this out first-hand this year when I got the honor of putting up my grandmothers' 65-year-old metallic tree. My twin brother and I had fun putting up the tree, talking about past Christmases, but then the thought hit me: I have to disassemble and put this back the way I found it!

Queen Anne's snowflakes hang in the window panes at the Garrard County Public Library in Lancaster. The intricate ornaments are from summer's bounty of the wildflower, Queen Anne's lace. The flower heads were collected by Library Director Joan Tussey from the hay field next door to her home. She puts the lacy flowers in thick library catalogues and lets them dry in the back seat of her car. Then she spray paints the flowers silver, transforming them from wildflower to snowflakes for Christmas decorations.

The symbol of a light bulb going on to represent a great idea definitely applies to Sue Davidson. Except, in her case, the light bulb has gone out. She changes used light bulbs into all kinds of Christmas tree ornaments. With paint, glitter and hats, she creates elves, Santas - both black and white - penguins, reindeer, and snowmen whose toboggans are in colors of various athletic teams. "I figure a light bulb is something you're throwing in the garbage, so take something and make something out of it. " All the bulbs grace a tree she keeps in the basement of her Danville home.

The theme of a memorial service held at Jessamine Christian Church last Thursday night by Hospice of the Bluegrass Jessamine County was "A Gift of Hope. " The purpose of the service, which was open to the public, was to give people a chance to gather together in memory of loved ones. The sanctuary was bathed in a soft light from the Christmas tree as the small crowd shared tears and memories of loved ones. After the service, the visitors enjoyed a reception with refreshments.

When Julie Maruskin was growing up in Bourbon County, her favorite Christmas tree ornaments were not fancy or expensive. Instead, Maruskin recalls being enamored with small pipe cleaner creations that cost pennies at department stores like Penney’s and Woolworth’s. “They were all constructed by hand, so they were all slightly different,” Maruskin said of the figurines. The ornaments were popular from the early part of the 20th century through the 1960s, Maruskin said.

Oh, Christmas tree. How many times can you and your tinsel covered branches make an appearance in the same column? Apparently, a lot. Here’s the thing — I have a little confession to make. In the past, I have joked about my inability to muster up enough initiative to take down my Christmas tree. But it has always come down eventually. I may have joked about leaving it up all year, but I never actually did it. Until now. I guess technically the fact that it’s still just October means that there’s time to change course, and live a better life, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.

My 30-year-old hand-me-down Christmas tree has resumed its rightful place in my living room for another holiday season. When I drug it out of the closet, I had a weird feeling that it was only yesterday that I was putting it in the closet. Probably because it was only April. Nothing says "Happy Easter" like a Christmas tree that's been around longer than I have. Maybe I should invest in some new decorations ? ornaments fit for any occasion, since, apparently, the tree is going to be around for all occasions.
