Parks and Rec offers swim lessons The Winchester-Clark County Parks and Recreation Department is offering swimming lessons through Sept. 20. Classes will be every Tuesday and Thursday for four weeks. Cost is $40 for the entire session. All lessons are 30 minutes. Parent/child classes begin at 5 p.m., level I at 5:30 p.m., level II at 6 p.m., level III at 6:30 p.m., and level IV/V at 7 p.m. Adult lessons will be scheduled pending interest. Fiscal Court special meeting Friday The Clark County Fiscal County will hold a special meeting at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the courthouse.

McClain honored by Ky. Parks and Rec A Lindsey Wilson College student from Mercer County was honored Friday for her contributions to Kentucky's recreation and parks profession. Senior Tracy McClain of Harrodsburg received two honors from the statewide group. She received the McClellan Award, a scholarship given to the top Kentucky undergraduate in the recreation and park profession; and the KRPS Outstanding College Senior Award. McClain is a recreation, tourism and sport management major with a double-major in Christian ministries.

The Nicholasville-Jessamine County Parks and Recreation Board met in a closed session prior to its regular meeting Monday night. The board met with two representatives for the two bid proposals it recieved an hour before opening the meeting to the public. The board intended to go back into a closed session to continue the decision-making process for filling the parks and recreation director position. But the public participation period of the meeting was longer than the board anticipated.

The Nicholasville/Jessamine County Parks and Recreation office will host a 6K run Oct. 11 at 2 p.m. Check-in will begin at 1 p.m. at West Jessamine High School. The 6K will end at East Jessamine High School. Proceeds from the walk/run will be used to provide a college scholarship for a senior student athlete from East and West in the names of Ralph Sallee and Ryan Robinson. All runners will receive a T-shirt, with awards going to the top three male and top three female finishers.

The regular season of the men's open softball league came to an end last week after a couple of rainouts. Auto U.S.A completed the season with a perfect 10-0 record. Three teams had identical 7-3 records with the team from First Church of God named runner-up after comparing records with the other two teams. The final standings were as follows: Auto U.S.A.; First Church of God; Bill's Carryout; Skyball Bombers; Bowen Church of God; First Christian Church; Winchester Warriors; Swat; Niles Wintech and Mean Machine.

Residents visiting the normally tranquil Rock Fence Park on Saturday were soon rockin' to the beat of '60s and '70s music closing out the park's concert series. Teg Evans, director of the Bluegrass Arts Association, said this year's five-concert series attracted between 75-150 spectators for each performance. The final act saw between 150 and 175 people present. “We have been doing it off and on since 2001,” Evans said. “We started out doing concerts way back then, under the old pavilion.

When the Winchester-Clark County Parks Board began searching for a new parks director in December, it didn't have to go far to find a replacement for former director Geri Remley. Winchester resident Jeff Lewis was named the new parks director by the board during its meeting Jan. 9. Lewis, a Cattletsburg native who has lived in Winchester for the past six years, was selected because of his strong military background and his work with a juvenile facility in Jackson, according to Board Chairman Charlie Eury.

The man Centre College called the "winningest coach in school history," Tom Bryant, died Monday at his home. Bryant, 72, of Meadowbrook Drive, was Centre's men's basketball coach 1968 -96, the athletic director for 21 years and served two terms as a Danville city commissioner. "This is going to be a big loss for this community," said City Commissioner Jamey Gay, who worked with Bryant at Centre and was a fellow commissioner when Bryant served from 1999 -2002. "He loved Danville and always had what was best for Danville at the forefront of what he did. One of his real loves, passions was parks and rec. ... He had a passion for young people, and making sure we had the things we needed for a great parks and rec system in this community.

Local disc golfers will have an opportunity to compete against some of the region's best Nov. 21 in the Turkey Toss. The Winchester Clark County Parks and Recreation is sponsoring an 18-hole sanctioned disc golf tournament at Ironworks Hills disc golf course. Nine temporary holes will be added to the course for the first-ever 18-hole event at the course. The tournament will consist of two 18-hole rounds with a one hour break between rounds. All Professional Disc Golf Association divisions will be offered.
