Working to get dog park in Winchester Dear Editor, I would like to thank Meagan Shetler for her letter to the editor on Wednesday, Aug. 22nd. Yes! We do need a dog park here in Winchester! Ms. Shetler's letter is very timely. My name is Cora Kerber and I am a member of Girl Scout Troop No. 644. I am currently working on my Gold Award which requires completing a sustainable community-based service project. My goal is to create a dog park here in Winchester. I am grateful to be working with Jeff Lewis, director of parks and rec, on this project.

A Jessamine County group is participating in a competition with other communities to come up with ways to help the people in those communities conserve energy and go green. Jessamine Go Green, which is made up of six 16 to 24-year-olds and a coach, decided to go to local businesses and assess their energy consumption and recycling habits and teach them about ways to conserve resources, save money and help the environment. "We're giving them green tips on how to recycle, how to save energy, things like that," Coach Marilyn Fleckinstein said.

Winchester-Clark County Parks and Recreation has added tennis to its list of programs during a monthly meeting Monday night at College Park Gym. Although the department has offered tennis lessons during the past couple of years, the board gave approval to join the United States Tennis Association Monday night. Parks and Recreation Director Geri Remley is in the process of applying for a grant to set up a scholarship program and help purchase equipment. Remley said the program will kick off this fall, starting Sept.

The latest draft of Clark County's 2013 fiscal year budget projects a surplus of $401,000. The draft came from a nearly three-hour budget workshop Wednesday night, during which members of the Clark County Fiscal Court decided not to award any Clark County Community Foundation grants this summer. Instead, the foundation's approximately $80,000 will be carried over into the 2013 budget to help replenish the reserves. Clark County Judge-Executive Henry Branham will present the draft budget to the fiscal court next week.

A new director has been selected for the Winchester-Clark County Parks and Recreation Department, the parks board announced Monday night. Winchester resident Jeff Lewis will replace Geri Remley, who left the position in December after two years to lead the parks and recreation department in Scott County. Board chairman Charlie Eury said Lewis was selected because of his strong military career, and the work he did leading a juvenile detention center in Jackson. “That's really what stood out in his application and doing the references.

The Winchester-Clark County Parks and Recreation Board is moving swiftly toward filling its vacant directors position. The position has been empty since Geri Remley resigned last month to take a similar position in Georgetown. Last week the board met to review the 18 applications it received for the position, Board Chairman Charlie Eury said, then narrowed the list to six applicants it wanted to interview. On Tuesday, the board interviewed those six individuals, and Eury said the board is now following up on those interviews.

A small group of about 50 people gathered at Nicholasville Elementary School Saturday afternoon to honor the 2011 inductees to the Jessamine County Parks and Recreation Hall of Fame. The nine members enshrined this year were J.R. Banks, Tommy Orme, R.J. Corman, Sherman Dean, Jay Buffin, Dan Young Shearer, Monte Carpenter, Andy Williams and Ronnie Crowe. • Banks coached youth soccer for more than 10 years as well as T-ball and Little League. Off the field, he has been one of the largest financial contributors to youth sports for more than 30 years.

The Danville Boyle County Parks and Recreation Department will be extending Adult Softball sign-ups through May 24 for the men's league that plays on Monday and Thursday. League fee is $300 per team and an additional $50 for special scheduling. Games will start June 5. For information call 859-238-1233.
