Last year's Winchester-Clark County Parks and Recreation Department's summer day camp was a big success with more than 60 children showing up each day. When this year's camp opened Monday, parks officials thought there would be some increase in attendance - and they were right. A record 134 “very excited” kids showed up at College Park ready for a fun filled summer, Parks Board Chairman Charlie Eury said Monday. “We had 166 pre-register, but we had way more than we anticipated show up this morning,” Eury said at the board meeting.

The latest draft of Clark County's 2013 fiscal year budget projects a surplus of $401,000. The draft came from a nearly three-hour budget workshop Wednesday night, during which members of the Clark County Fiscal Court decided not to award any Clark County Community Foundation grants this summer. Instead, the foundation's approximately $80,000 will be carried over into the 2013 budget to help replenish the reserves. Clark County Judge-Executive Henry Branham will present the draft budget to the fiscal court next week.

With summer fast approaching, the Winchester-Clark County Parks and Recreation Department is gearing up for a busy season. The July 4 Celebration committee is working to finalize plans for this year's event, which will be Tuesday, July 3, at Lykins Park. Last year at this time, there was some doubt as to whether the department would be able to afford the expensive fireworks show - the signature feature of the celebration - due to a lack of funds. But committee chairman Tim Smith said things look a lot better this year, that the committee is “way ahead of this time last year” and is working hard to put the finishing touches on its plans and securing the necessary funding.

When the Winchester-Clark County Parks Board began searching for a new parks director in December, it didn't have to go far to find a replacement for former director Geri Remley. Winchester resident Jeff Lewis was named the new parks director by the board during its meeting Jan. 9. Lewis, a Cattletsburg native who has lived in Winchester for the past six years, was selected because of his strong military background and his work with a juvenile facility in Jackson, according to Board Chairman Charlie Eury.

A new director has been selected for the Winchester-Clark County Parks and Recreation Department, the parks board announced Monday night. Winchester resident Jeff Lewis will replace Geri Remley, who left the position in December after two years to lead the parks and recreation department in Scott County. Board chairman Charlie Eury said Lewis was selected because of his strong military career, and the work he did leading a juvenile detention center in Jackson. “That's really what stood out in his application and doing the references.
