It's not every day that high school students get to watch their teachers and advisors get their groove on to the latest rap songs. On Friday morning West Jessamine High School students enjoyed this rare opportunity at a pep rally to get them motivated to do well on their Commonwealth Accountability Testing (CATS), which started on Tuesday. "We just wanted to do it as a motivator," said Missie Heady, the school's guidance counselor. "We're a community and we have fun. " Gina Gravalt, a careers and special education teacher, who along with Heady, and other faculty and staff at the school, put on the skit and dancing for the students, said she thought the students had a great time.

Lamar Dawson had never seen a pep rally like this before. Dawson was the guest of honor at an event Thursday at Boyle County High School that celebrated his selection to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Cheerleaders cheered, the dance team spelled his name with pompoms, and the band played the school fight song at a pep rally held not to get the student body fired up for the next big game, but to applaud the most significant honor to date for the Boyle linebacker. “The whole pep rally just for me, it was kind of nervous for me. I was a little bit nervous,” Dawson said.

Dressed in a black sweatsuit with a bright blue "Danville" emblazoned across his hooded shirt, Vaughn Little paced back and forth, his booming voice thundering with both threatening warnings and motivating messages. It seemed like a Friday night with Little walking the sidelines of Admiral Stadium, where he performs his role as a Danville High School assistant football coach. But his venue Tuesday night was a small auditorium at Cornerstone Assembly of God. The role he was playing was that of an ordained pastor, which he performs on Sunday mornings at Glen Arvin Church of Christ in Lexington.

BOWLING GREEN - Casey County managed to slow its game with Iroquois down to a snail's pace at the end of the first half. And if the Rebels had ever gotten the lead in the second half, it's a good bet the game would have gotten a whole lot slower. Casey was prepared to hold the ball if it ever got ahead of Iroquois in the second half of its girls Sweet Sixteen quarterfinal Saturday morning. But that never happened as Iroquois pulled away for a 52-43 victory. Still, the Rebels showed what a stall might look like when they held the ball for most of the final 2 minutes, 40 seconds of the second quarter before taking the final shot of the first half.

JUNCTION CITY - The halls of Junction City Elementary School Friday looked more like a concert for The Rolling Stones. Or "High School Musical on Ice," to be more age appropriate. As Queen's "We are the Champions" reverberated throughout the halls of the school, the students filed into the gymnasium for the fourth annual "Pep Rally for Academics," a school-wide party to get students excited for upcoming CATS testing. Each year in April, fourth- and fifth-graders across the state endure four days of the Kentucky Core Content Test, a vital part of Commonwealth Accountability Testing System consisting of in-depth standardized tests canvassing the core areas of education.
