When we think of our small towns that stretch across the United States, let us always be proud of our heritage as to where we grew up. My hometown in southern Illinois at one time had about 25 businesses on Main Street that included three restaurants, when the population was about 850. This was in the 1950s.   We owned and operated a hardware business there that had been a mainstay since the late 1800s, and we were the second family to have the hardware store. We were in that business about 40 years, which included a bottle gas business.

I am writing this letter to endorse Dickie Mayes as a candidate for magistrate in the Perryville district. I believe he would do the very best job possible to represent his constituents, in the most fair and straightforward way. I have known Dickie and his family for more than 10 years. Our sons are friends and played football together at Boyle County High School. I have been with Dickie and his wife in several personal settings. They are wonderful folks. Just the right family that would represent the Perryville district, as needed.

Boyle County’s smaller municipalities passed budgets Tuesday night that show revenues growing for one and declining for the other. Junction City passed a $280,948 general fund spending plan, up from $189,780 in 2010-2011. However, most of the increase is due to a reserve fund that will go from $11,900 to $83,528.  Total general fund income for the city is expected to climb by about $58,000, in part due to an increase in insurance and ad valorem tax revenue. Mayor Jim Douglas said growing revenue and holding spending steady have been keys to the city’s financial health.

It’s very likely that the people in economic need who get food from the Danville Food Bank don’t know and probably have never even heard of Jim and Sheree Page. If they did, they might feel moved to mention their names in their Thanksgiving Day meal prayer. The Gages aren’t into notoriety or even being thanked. What the Perryville area farm couple are into is doing what they can to help people in need. And the result of the couple’s mission to help needy people is what might be called an annual cornucopia of caring with the local food bank being the immediate beneficiary.

President Abraham Lincoln apparently thought it was time for the Union Army to take control after watching the Confederates smash Union troops in battles and before the Southerners took over the Union-controlled border state of Kentucky in 1862. Battles in Washington, D.C.; Richmond, Va.; Maryland; and Corinth, Miss., were considered victories for the Southern Army, said Kurt Holman, superintendent of Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site. Holman considers the Oct. 8, 1862, battle at Perryville as one of the turning points in the Civil War. Both sides of the Civil War wanted to control Kentucky because of its central location and its control of two rivers.
