PERRYVILLE¿ - A lack of visible house numbers could lead to problems for emergency medical crews coming to Perryville, according to Fire Chief Anthony Young “If it's us, it's Charlie (Parks), it's the sheriff's department, it's people around and who know houses, know the streets, it's not that big of a deal,” Young said at Thursday's City Council meeting, adding serious problems could arise when emergency crews from outside the area have to be called to Perryville. “There's places in Perryville where the numbering system is not continuous,” he explained, which makes it more confusing for someone who isn't as familiar with the city.

Perryville Battlefield Preservation Association, which announced in May that it was disbanding, has yet to do so. That's putting the city of Perryville in a tough spot, according to council members at their meeting Thursday. “It's really put us in a bind and, to be frank about it, they know they've put us in a bind,” Councilman Brian Caldwell said during the meeting. About 20 years ago, the city, which owns many of the Merchants Row properties and others in Perryville, entered into a 99-year lease with the PBPA, which was focused on historical preservation of the properties.

PERRYVILLE - After losing nearly all of her goats in a recent barn fire, a woman is speaking out about the dangers of heat lamps and the importance of insuring farm property. Donna Slack, of Whites Road, said she has been using heat lamps for more than five years. “Right along with everyone else,” Slack said. Heat lamps were only used in Slack's barn to warm and dry newborn goats for a few days until the babies became acclimated to the cold weather, she said. Slack checked on the lamps and goats before she left Dec. 22 for a trip to Indiana.

PERRYVILLE - The large room that is Mary Girard's Merchants Row office has a gorgeous view of the Chaplin River. Sunlight filters through the open office where Girard works her magic with certain often-very-old objects. Girard is an art conservator who moved into the Perryville space in October. She moved back to central Kentucky in January from southern Florida, to be closer to family and to raise her son with her husband. She says as an art conservator she works with the “conservation and restoration of paintings and works of art on paper.” Girard can, for example, take in a painting with a tear in the canvas, and work on it to “minimize its chances of getting torn again.” She also might add hardware to the painting; many paintings have been saved with a 30-cent piece of hardware, Girard added.
