Wilt-Lied Betsy and Marshall Wilt of Danville announce the engagement of their daughter, Allison Elaine, to Michael Charles Lied, son of Karen and James Lied of Fort Thomas. Wilt is a 1991 graduate of Danville High School, a 1994 graduate of Duke University and a 1999 graduate of University of Louisville Medical School. She is a fifth year resident at University of Cincinnati, plastic surgery. She's a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha. The groom is a 1993 graduate of Highland High School an a 1997 graduate of Miami University.

Dec. 17, 1961 Miss Evelyn Frances Rupard has been initiated into the University of Kentucky chapter of the honorary scholastic fraternity, Phi Beta Kappa. The mathematics major has compiled an scholastic standing of 3.84 of a possible 4.0. Miss Rupard is a graduate of Clark County High School and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Shelby Rupard, Kiddville Pike. The charter for Air Explorer Scout Post No. 267, sponsored by the Rotary Club, was presented at the club's luncheon Friday at the Old South Inn. Washington (AP)

The mathematics major has compiled an scholastic standing of 3.84 of a possible 4.0. Miss Rupard is a graduate of Clark County High School and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Shelby Rupard, Kiddville Pike. May 26, 1957 William J. Collis, Winchester, an honor student at the University of Kentucky, has been selected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa national scholastic society. Collis is a member of the 1954 graduating class of Winchester High School where he finished third in a class of 44. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Collis of Winchester. Nancy Rupard was named champion in the annual Clark County 4-H Style Review Saturday at the East Kentucky Rural Electric Cooperative Corporation community room.

Eleanor Vernon Hall Hayden of Wilmore, wife of Joseph Hayden, died Dec. 22. She was 91. Mrs. Hayden grew up near Chicago and graduated from Cornell College, where she received her private pilot’s license and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She lived in Lexington for most of her life and was active in the Council of Church Women, PTA, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Bluegrass Astronomical Society, Lexington Safety Council, Easter Pageant, Philharmonic Auxiliary, Aviation Round Table, Right To Life and Friends of the Library.

Ms. Allison Elliott and Dr. Brent Shannon are engaged to be married.  Elliott, a native of Liberty, is the daughter of Roger and Sheila Elliott of Columbia. The bride-elect also is the granddaughter of William and Billye Anne Hansford of Liberty and the late James and Maxine Elliott of Yosemite.  She is graduate of Casey County High School. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a bachelor's degree in history from Centre College, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, and holds a master's degree in public communication from American University in Washington, D.C. She is employed as a senior public relations specialist for the University of Kentucky medical center and is active in the Junior League of Lexington.

Centre College: Area students received bachelor's degrees during recent commencement exercises. Eighty-two percent of the class of 2007 studied abroad, the largest percentage in the college's history. Tim Russert, journalist, political analyst, and moderator of NBC's "Meet the Press," delivered the commencement address. Graduates are: Sommer Bailey of Harrodsburg earned a degree in anthropology/sociology. She is the daughter of Julie and Rod Johnson of Harrodsburg and a graduate of Mercer County High School.

William W. Johnston, Centre College's H.W. Stodghill Jr. and Adele H. Stodghill Professor of Mathematics and associate dean, has been selected to serve as Randolph-Macon College's new provost and chief academic officer. Johnston, who will begin in his new position on July 1, will move to Ashland, Va., with his wife Susan and daughter Katie. "Bill Johnston has contributed to the Centre tradition of camaraderie and has helped create an even more collegial and engaging environment for the excellent work of our faculty," said Centre president John A. Roush.

Retired Colonel Harold Wilson Holtzclaw, PhD, 83, long-time resident of Alexandria, Va., passed away Friday, Aug. 24 of natural causes. Hal was born Oct. 4, 1928, in Harrodsburg, Ky. He attended Breckenridge Training School in Morehead, Ky., as well as the University of Kentucky where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1949 and a Master of Arts in 1950. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa. He received a PhD from the University of Denver in 1963. He also attended the National War College.

Movie and television producer Jerry Bruckheimer and his wife, best-selling novelist and preservation advocate Linda Bruckheimer, will be the featured speakers May 24 at Centre College's 186th commencement. The Bruckheimers will each receive the honorary degree of doctor of humane letters. They have homes at Bloomfield in Nelson County and in California. Centre also will award an honorary doctor of divinity degree to the Rev. Carol Ann Tate, pastor of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Nashville, Tenn.

Animal center has new groomer Melody Hollis is a new groomer at Animal Medical Center, 3880 S. Danville bypass. She has more than five years experience and has taught her techniques at Nash Academy of Grooming in Lexington. She grooms canine and feline pets.
