Glenn Ballard, 90, of Winchester, widower of the late Marjorie McFarland Ballard, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 3 at the VA Medical Center in Lexington. Mr. Ballard was born in Clay City on Nov. 29, 1921, to the late Mattie Ballard Hood. He was a retired heavy equipment hauler and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his son, David Ballard (Rosemary) of Paris; granddaughter, Hayden Terstegge (John) of Petaluma, Calif.; great-grandson, Kelan Terstegge of California; brother, L.B. Hood of Longmont, Colo.; and sister, Roxie Hash of Winchester. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen Ballard; and two brothers, Paul Hood and Cebert Hood.

Dorothy Adams Taylor, 88, of Winchester, widow of the late Raymond Taylor, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at the Fountain Circle Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Powell County on July 28, 1923 to the late John Q. and Stella Clemmons Adams. She was retired from the Belk-Simpson Co. after 25 years of service. Survivors include her son, Ronnie Ray Taylor of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands; four grandchildren, Ben Taylor, Doug Taylor, Annessa Marley and Iris Taylor; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elsie Moore and Fern Wilson; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Florene Ginter Oaks, 83, of Winchester, widow of the late Troy Franklin Oaks, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012 at the Fountain Circle Health and Rehabilitation Center. Mrs. Oaks was born in Powell County to the late Floyd and Lula Crowe Ginter. Survivors include her son, Dr. James Franklin Oaks of Lexington; her daughter, Vanessa Oaks Rogers of Clark County; four granddaughters, Morgan Oaks of San Diego, Calif., Brittany Oaks of Somerset, Jessica Oaks of Lexington, and Mary Oaks of Lexington; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Keith Franklin Oaks.

Helen Combs Smith, 72, of Stanton, Ky., formerly of Winchester, passed away on Jan. 11, 2012, at the UK Medical Center in Lexington. Born in Powell County, she was the daughter of the late Doyle F. and Florida Sparks Combs. She was a former factory employee of Wintech in Winchester, and she was a member of the Estill County and Powell County historical societies. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by two brothers, Calvin Combs and Howard Combs, and by her half-sister, Carolyn Tipton.

BEULAH WATSON PUCKETT Beulah Watson Puckett, 84, of Winchester, widow of Elmer “Rube” Puckett, passed away Saturday at the Clark Regional Medical Center. She was born in Estill County on Oct. 7, 1927, to the late Marion and Virginia “Dolly” Watson. She was a member of the Antioch Christian Church. Remonia Lee Townsend, 68, of Winchester, passed away Thursday at the Clark Regional Medical Center. A native of Clark County, she was born Dec. 14, 1942, to the late Johnny Conkwright and Anna Maude Frazier Conkwright Jamison. She formerly worked for Lepages and Lomas Manufacturing Company, was a member of the Trinity Church of God and attended the Ark of Mercy. It will be a battle of top-10 teams in Lancaster on Friday when No. 8 Powell County and No. 10 Garrard County meet in a key Class AAA, District 5 contest. “It will be great for the program. I think many of us felt Powell could be a pretty good team this year because of the experience they return and the style of offense Coach (Tony) Burchett employs,”¿Garrard coach Mark Scenters said. “When they beat Pike County Central a few weeks ago, I think that was their statement that Powell County is a team to be reckoned with this season.” The unbeaten Pirates are averaging 33.8 points and 337 yards of offense per game, while giving up 16 points and 194 yards per game.

Anderson P. “Andy” Bush, 92, widower of Alice Childers Bush, passed away at 4:20 p.m. Monday, Sept. 5 at the Clark Regional Medical Center. A native of Powell County, he was the son of the late William Goeble and Mattie V. Mize Bush. Andy was a retired professional baseball player and a retiree of Clark Rural Electric. Andy was also an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the V.F.W. Survivors include two stepchildren, Jeff Rogers and Phyllis Payne; four stepgrandchildren; several step great-grandchildren; a brother, William Goeble Bush Jr.; a sister, Ann B. Carter; and a number of nieces and nephews.
