One of the great things about living in an old house is that things are always breaking down in new and interesting ways. A part of me wonders, once in a while, where I might be in life if I hadn't spent so many hours repairing, patching, scraping, painting and hammering away at our house. But another part of me, the part my wife calls the stupid part, enjoys the challenge of keeping this old house from falling in on itself. When the toilet in our third floor bathroom got wobbly, my wife called Chuck, our plumber, to check it out. Chuck called me later with a sad sigh.

A¿George Rogers Clark High School senior is using his love of history and his family's tradition of woodworking to make some unique crafts - and shots - of his own. Recently, Justin Neal, 17, showed off some of his finished projects, including a completed 1600s-era muzzleloader, hand-carved wooden tableware and handmade powder horns. The gun took about 100 hours to build , and he constructed everything on it but the barrel. It was the first one he completed by hand. A friend from his church got him interested in making the firearm.

It took a life-changing experience for J.T. Kirkland to appreciate visual art. As a kid growing up in Lexington, Kirkland, a 2001 graduate of Centre College, was not exposed to a great deal of visual art. "Sure, I took a class or two in elementary school, where we made macaroni necklaces, but I never saw great art in person," Kirkland explained. "So until the age of 20, I very much disliked art and artists. It's foolish thinking back upon that time now, but I think it's an integral part of my development as an artist.

Winchester Fire-EMS firefighters have been training this week on a new $300,000 foam trailer that will be housed at the Lexington Fire Department and be available to surrounding counties through the BERT program. The Wilmore Police Department is currently investigating four burglaries that have taken place throughout the last week, Chief Steve Boven said in a press release Wednesday. The burglaries at Ready To Go Video, located at 111 S. Lexington Ave., and Dollar General, located at 113 S. Lexington Ave., occurred sometime between 4:45 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. on Aug. 8. The burglaries at the Asbury College Equine Center and Wilmore Free Methodist Church, located at 1200 Lexington Road, happened between late evening Aug. 14 and early morning Aug. 15. In all four of the incidents, doors were pried open and obtaining cash was the primary objective, Boven said.

WINCHESTER POLICE Reports - At 2:46 p.m Wednesday, officers were called to 226 Winn Ave. after someone broke into a residence and took CDs, DVDs and a DVD player. - At 5:34 p.m. Wednesday, officers were called to 404 Noble King Court after someone took a lock box, a laptop computer and a portable DVD¿player. - At 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, officers were called to 225 Oxford Drive for a theft of power tools. - At 10:04 p.m. Wednesday, officers were called to 15 A St. after someone broke in and took a television.

Jewelry, gun and cash taken in burglary Danville police are investigating a burglary that occurred about 1 a.m. Wednesday. Lanius Ellery of Citation Drive told police someone took several pieces of jewelry, a 9 mm pistol and cash from his residence. Police also are investigating a Monday burglary at Jerry Kilby's residence on Ridgefield Drive. Several power tools were taken, police said. Casey teen injured in crash LIBERTY - Jason Harris, 18, of Liberty, was injured Thursday in a two-vehicle crash on Henson Ridge Road four miles south of here, state police said.

LIBERTY - Two men were charged early Monday with receiving stolen property, police said. Donald A. Adams, 32, of Eubank, and James V. Smith Jr., 38, of 640 Fishing Creek Road, Yosemite, were arrested at 3:14 a.m. by state police. Kevin D. Mitchell, 25, of Ferguson, was arrested and charged with fleeing or evading police. Police apprehended two of the men in a car near a bridge on Fishing Creek Road. Mitchell fled on foot. After the vehicle was searched, drug-related items and several cases of power tools were found.

Three people suspected of burglarizing homes in Jessamine County were arrested in Wilmore Monday. Daniel Biddle, 18, 210 Garnett Drive; Aaron Jackson, 19, 1247 Short Shun Pike; and Dustin Watson, 19, 216 Leesburg Road, Harrodsburg, were each arrested and charged with possession of burglary tools and receiving stolen property more than $300, Jessamine County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Allen Peel said. The three were pulled over by Wilmore police in a 1988 Toyota Camry on West Main Street around 1:20 p.m. for not wearing seat belts, according to a Wilmore police report.

Charged — Robert Elliott II, 27, of Mount Sterling, was charged Tuesday with second-degree wanton endangerment, receiving stolen property (firearm), possession of marijuana and prescription controlled substance not in its proper container. — Arron Jackson, 55, of 185 Shady Hill Lane, was charged Tuesday with possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, prescription controlled substance not in its proper container and alcohol intoxication. Reports — At 2:40 a.m. Wednesday, East Kentucky Power employees reported that someone stole an iron gate from the Red River Road entrance to the power plant on Irvine Road.
