Dear Editor: After reading Steve Knight's letter in the April 28 edition of "Voice of the People," I have decided that Roger Trent's proposed smoking ban needs some revisions. I have come up with 25 additional items and their detrimental effects that should be eliminated or banned to improve public health: Factories - Dust, noise, air pollution. Trees, flowers, grass and plants - Pollen causes allergic reaction, people should stay inside. Contact with other people - Germs and diseases.

Standby generators provide emergency electrical power during outages caused by winter storms and other disasters. However, you need to take some special precautions to ensure safe, efficient operation of these generators. Use a double-throw type transfer switch if you're connecting a standby generator directly to an existing electrical wiring system to provide power for a home, farm or small business. A double-throw switch allows you to place, or "throw," the switch into two different positions.

LANCASTER - The first reading of a nuisance ordinance passed here Monday, and Donna Powell says she feels good about the hard work it took to get to this point. "The trouble with most ordinances is enforcing them," Powell, mayor pro-tem, said. "The difference with this one is that we made sure to make the enforcement a responsibility of the officer in charge. " Powell said the police officer, or whoever may be enforcing the ordinance, may cite those in violation on the scene.

Each day I wake up and thank God for the life he has given me.  And each day I pray for the people of this world, asking God to grant them strength, comfort and understanding for the trials they might be going thru. Recently, my Brother, Kyle and his Wife Jami lost their home to a fire, a fire that took everything they owned.  Jami's father, Truman recently had heart surgery and her mother, Lana is battling cancer.   Kyle and Jami have so much to deal with right now.  So many people have been so wonderful to them the gift of money, clothes and personal items.  I would like to take the opportunity to thank each person that has been so kind to them during this time as they struggle with the loss of personal items and deal with the sickness in their family.

The Blue Building at City-County Park has been used for many events from family reunions to wrestling. But on Saturday, it was transformed into the “Blue Building Speedway” as 47 Cub Scouts from Pack 45 hit the track for their annual pinewood-derby event. In a pinewood derby, “drivers” cannot offer excuses about tire pressures, blown engines or another driver wrecking in front of them; it all comes down to each car's preparation, and, of course, gravity. But more importantly for the members of Pack 45, it was a chance to have fun. Pinewood committee co-chair and Tiger den leader Darrell Jordan said because the cars have to be put together from a kit, it turns out to be a family event.

LANCASTER — The effort to restore the historic Lancaster Grand Theater is progressing rather quietly — you wouldn’t notice much change other than a couple new windows if you passed the old, seemingly derelict building along Lexington Road. But inside, power tools and hammers are often heard echoing around the large auditorium. Restoration of the Lancaster Grand Theater, a landmark and social gathering place from decades past, is an ongoing project that has been in the works for years.
