The first week of August, when it was so hot you could almost feel your body fluids starting to boil and the air was so saturated that a stroll felt like walking in water, my brother-in-law said to me: "I love this kind of weather!"I raised my eyebrows and said, "You're not right. " And I didn't just mean that he was wrong. The heat index on Aug. 7, according to the Sun's Web site, was 104 degrees. That's 24 degrees more than what I find comfortable and about 40 degrees more than what I'd call perfect outdoor weather.

This may not be the politically correct position to state, but if all opinions were restricted by that mandate, it is likely there would be very few discussions of any interest or merit to ever take place. On occasion, there has been a public debate regarding the designation of English as the official language of the United States. Some countries around the world have taken steps to designate their own native tongues as the official language. American society may be too diverse to ever take the step to make English its official language; it certainly appears that Congress is too stratified to ever reach such a conclusion.

It is official: Danville Pediatrics' “Wild West” exhibit has ridden off into the sunset, marking another successful blockbuster exhibit at the Community Arts Center. Now the arts center is poised to launch into a whole new year of exhibits, events, classes, community outreach, and more, but first: a little spring cleaning is in order.  For one, what comes up must come down - the numerous “Wild West” buildings, props, furniture, displays, artwork, collections, and activities all have to be dismantled, packed away, and in many cases, returned to their proper owners.

LANCASTER — The effort to restore the historic Lancaster Grand Theater is progressing rather quietly — you wouldn’t notice much change other than a couple new windows if you passed the old, seemingly derelict building along Lexington Road. But inside, power tools and hammers are often heard echoing around the large auditorium. Restoration of the Lancaster Grand Theater, a landmark and social gathering place from decades past, is an ongoing project that has been in the works for years.

The old beech tree at Centre College was known to all. It is estimated it had grown outside the college's Young Hall for somewhere between 140 to 200 years.  Young Hall received a facelift two years ago and, sadly, the tree died as a result of the construction activities around it. Centre biology professor Anne Lubbers requested a six-foot-tall section of the trunk be set aside. She formed a committee to find a sculptor to create a work of art to commemorate the well-loved landmark.

Now is the time to do farm equipment maintenance while there are still several weeks before the busy spring rush hits. Doing the repairs now can save time and aggravation later. If parts need to be ordered, doing so now can reduce the likelihood of delays during the critical spring days ahead. When checking equipment, pay particular attention to rubber components as these will sometimes become brittle and cracked during the winter. Check implements for broken or missing parts that need to be replaced.
