Win No. 301 didn’t take nearly as long as win No. 300. Danville had to wait some nine months to give coach Sam Harp his 300th career victory, but the Admirals gave him another just six days later, building some momentum Saturday with a 40-0 romp over Rockcastle County in the Bob Allen Pigskin Classic at Admiral Stadium. The Admirals turned in a second straight impressive performance on defense, holding Rockcastle to 72 yards and a single first down. “Our defense is back,” Danville linebacker Tevin Raines said.

Boyle County coach Larry French was a little happier with his defensive effort Saturday night, but was not satisfied despite the Rebels 51-20 win over Franklin County Saturday in the opening game of the Bob Allen Pigskin Classic at Admiral Stadium. “We still made a lot of mistakes, but the bottom line is we still won the ballgame and I’m pleased with that,” the veteran Boyle coach said. “It certainly wasn’t pretty. We are making mistakes in positions that we can’t afford to make them in, and it cost us.” Last week at Johnson Central, the Rebels relied heavily on senior running back Chris Cook, who ran for 193 yards in the win. Saturday, the Rebels used a balanced attack in an attempt to get Cook, who also plays linebacker on defense, some relief.

Kyle Wipert and Brent Stoneking will share duties at left split end, while the right-side will be led by Tanner Rose and Khmarkis Blanton.

The George Rogers Clark football team has plenty to play for with three games left in the regular season. The Cardinals have a shot at securing a home playoff game with two district games remaining, starting with Friday's contest at Tates Creek. Clark also remains in contention for a possible top seed, if it can run the table in the district, along with a little help from the other three district teams during the next two weeks. “We take care of business this Friday and (then) against Madison Central, we're hosting a playoff game,” Clark coach Steven Collins said.

Former George Rogers Clark football coach Paul Columbia has retracted a statement he made following his dismissal as coach last week. In a letter sent to The Sun Wednesday, Columbia said he was “stunned” when he received a “reduction of responsibility for coaching duties” by Clark County Schools Superintendent Elaine Farris last Friday. “I asked Superintendent Farris if l could say I resigned,” he said in the letter. “I did not agree with the reasoning given for being fired and I was thinking of making the transition easier for the team.
