take in its regular-season home finale. The Cardinals, who broke a four-game losing streak with a 27-12 triumph over Tates Creek last week, can solidify a second-place finish in the district and secure a home playoff game to open the postseason with a win over Madison Central Friday night at Cardinal Stadium. “We need to make sure we win to at least finish second,” Clark coach Paul Columbia said earlier this week. Columbia said the win over Tates Creek last week gave his a boost heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.

The Lincoln County Patriots can’t wait to play. Lincoln is the only local football team that hasn’t played a game yet, and the Patriots will debut Friday when they host Rowan County. Rowan already has a game under its belt, and Lincoln coach Mike Settles said his players are chomping at the bit for their chance. “Rowan County has an edge because they have played an official game already, but our players cannot wait to get on the field, strap it up and hit somebody,” Lincoln coach Mike Settles said.

HARRODSBURG — Mercer County knows how to get the big play touchdowns, as the Titans had three that went for scores and another on special teams to set up another in last week’s win over South Laurel. But Mercer coach Bill Mason would love to see his Titans (3-3) put together a nice, long scoring drive that would chew minutes off the clock and give his defense a rest this week against Marion County (3-2). “We've shown the ability sustain drives in our first four games and didn't have to win this past week,” Mason said.

The George Rogers Clark football team hasn't forgotten last year's 21-7 loss at Corbin. The Cardinals will get a shot at redemption against the Redhounds tonight in the season opener for both teams at Cardinal Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. The contest a year ago between the two teams was one of several games that ended in disappointing fashion for the Cards, who finished 5-6 last season. Columbia said his team can't afford the same letdown this time around. “We need to get off to a better start than we did last year against them,” he said earlier this week.

The George Rogers Clark football team will conclude three weeks of spring workouts next week with the annual Red and White spring game set for 5:30 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium. The Cardinals were off this week because of spring break, but will return to the practice field in preparation for the scrimmage. Clark coach Paul Columbia has enjoyed lofty numbers this spring and hopes the same numbers will be produced next fall. Clark recently released its schedule, which features five home games against Corbin, Montgomery County, Henry Clay, Harlan County and Tates Creek.

JACKSON — Breathitt County scored on every possession Friday and ended the best season in Casey County history with a 54-34 victory in the second round of the Class AA playoffs. Alex Bolin ran for 145 yards on 18 carries with two touchdowns for Casey (8-4), which set a school record for wins and was playing in the second round of the playoffs for the first time. Casey finished with 436 yards of offense, but could not keep pace with the Bobcats (8-4), who had 446 yards. “We are not a team that outscores people, our ‘D’ just didn't play as well,” Casey coach Andy Stephens said.
