Former George Rogers Clark basketball star Preston Knowles had a lot of success during his playing days in Winchester. He finished his career in 2007 as one of the best players to ever wear a GRC uniform, and he was also one of the best players in the state that year. But while his extraordinary talents on the basketball floor drew the attention of a lot of college coaches, his attitude and reputation as a sometimes difficult player to coach, scared some of them off.   Knowles originally signed with Virginia Commonwealth University, but after receiving offers from others like Florida and Kentucky, he decided to look elsewhere.

Kentucky freshman Darius Miller has already started once, only four games into his collegiate career at Kentucky. Miller's early impact isn't a surprise, especially to fans and coaches in the 10th Region, including George Rogers Clark boys basketball coach Scott Humphrey. "I was probably as high on him as anybody," Humphrey said. "He was not a lot fun to prepare for, but he's an easy kid to root for. He does things the right way and he just has skills that very few (players)

The 10th Region will be well-represented when Louisville plays Tennessee tonight in the East Region semifinals. Former Clark star Preston Knowles plays for the Cardinals and of course Chris Lofton plays for the Volunteers. The University of the Cumberlands is ranked No. 14 in the nation this week. Former Clark baseball players Josh Wood and Ryan Bennett are members of the team. It must be golf time. The Masters is just around the corner. Who would have thought Western Kentucky would be the talk of the state this deep into the NCAA Tournament?

The "Class of 2007" at George Rogers Clark High School has yet to graduate, but this class will likely end up being one more noted for its athletic skills than any other group that has paced the hallways in recent memory. The vote for "Most Athletic" wasn't an easy choice for the class to make, considering the abundance of athletic talent in the entire class from top to bottom in each and every sport. Not to take anything away from the academic side, but it's been a while since one school produced so many standouts, including one who triples as a three-sport star - Tristan Jones - and another - Preston Knowles - who is one of the best pure basketball players to come out of this county in a long time.

GEORGETOWN -- Scott County was just too much. Too much on the perimeter, too much in the paint. Too much defensive pressure, too much offensive penetration. Too much Matt Walls. Too much Jordan Lee. And way too much Bud Mackey. Because Scott had too much of everything Friday night, George Rogers Clark was taken out of the game in the second quarter and taken apart in the second half as it suffered a 94-59 defeat in a semifinal at the Toyota Classic. "I thought tonight was just the perfect storm," Clark coach Scott Humphrey said.

LOUISVILLE - Preston Knowles entered the KFC Yum! Center with his daughter in his arms and smiling from ear-to-ear for senior night ceremonies Wednesday. And, that smile didn't leave his face from the time he took the opening tip and drilled a shot from the wing for first two points of the game, until he took his final bow as a Cardinal with two minutes left in Louisville's 87-60 win over Providence. The George Rogers Clark graduate flirted with a triple-double in his last game in front of the home fans, finishing with 20 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

LOUISVILLE (AP) — Rick Pitino didn’t buy into the hype, even as No. 20 Louisville ripped off eight straight wins to open the season. The coach refused to say whether the Cardinals were “legit” following a victory over UNLV last weekend, believing all the 22nd-ranked Runnin’ Rebels did was expose his team’s weaknesses — even if he refused to say what they were. There’s no need for him to expand now, not after Drexel methodically dismantled the Cardinals 52-46 on Tuesday night, ending Louisville’s unbeaten run at its new downtown arena.

LOUISVILLE — Louisville guard and former George Rogers Clark standout Preston Knowles would like to set the record straight: his diet isn’t nearly as bad as coach Rick Pitino says. “I eat pretty good, I eat Subway, what’s the guy? I think his name is Jerry, he and I had a little talk,” Knowles said. The senior captain, chastised recently by Pitino for poor conditioning and eating habits, certainly looked lighter on his feet on Wednesday night against Florida International, scoring a season-high 18 points as the Cardinals rolled by the lifeless Panthers 92-55.
