I don't know whether pumpkin is a fruit or vegetable. I looked it up online and I still don't know. My favorite definition, FOUND HERE , reads, "Botanically, pumpkins are classified as a fruit. Culinary, they are used mostly as a savory vegetable and sometimes as a fruit. " Right, then. That clarifies it. At dictionary.com, it's a fruit. At gardening sites, it's a vegetable because it has seeds. Frankly, I don't care whether it is a fruit or vegetable. I just like recipes that include pumpkin - it seems to be a hallmark of the end-of-year holiday season.

Not a fan of pumpkin pie? Me neither, but there's a recipe for pumpkin I do love, and fall is a great time to play around in the kitchen while the weather is turning dreary. Pumpkin soup is a colorful addition to meals, great with any type of bread as an appetizer, or even by itself. Because the fruit definitely does have its own distinct, rich flavor, start out with the base from this quick and easy recipe and after you've got the taste, add your own ingredients to give it a personalized flare.

While families are celebrating Thanksgiving Day with a large turkey and all the trimmings at home, inmates in county detention centers also are getting a little taste of holiday foods. They will get a traditional dinner of turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes and rolls, according to Boyle and Lincoln County jailers. Although the inmates won't be at the table with their families, Thanksgiving is a big visitation day for those incarcerated. Boyle Jailer Barry Harmon said Thanksgiving is one of the days when families typically fill up the visitation areas where they can talk with inmates by telephone but cannot have personal contact.

Mae Renner has recipes to take to the bank. A vice president at PBK, Renner combined her love of cooking and helping others when she took on the role of compiling cookbooks to benefit Relay for Life. She serves as chairwoman of Lincoln County's relay event. The first cookbook made more than $7,000. The second one, which contains about 700 recipes, is available at any PBK bank for $10. "Every bit of it goes to charity," says Renner, who has a 17-year career in banking. The second cookbook includes several of Renner's favorite recipes.

I stared out the window, my nose make making two small circles on the frosty glass as I watched my dad chase a large rooster around the yard. The rooster and I were the same age. But at 5 years old, our lives were at opposite junctions. Mine was just beginning, and his was about to culminate on the dinner table. I didn't sample any of the roasted rooster my family enjoyed that Thanksgiving. After witnessing the hapless bird's last dash, I stuck with vegetables and pumpkin pie. But that was the first Thanksgiving I can recall, and aside from the rooster trauma, it was a very pleasant day. I can recall the sound of wood crackling in the fireplace.

I guess the holiday season officially kicks off in November, but at my house, it's already getting into full swing. Josh and the kids walked around the farm the other day and picked out our Christmas tree. We've been scouting out mistletoe in the treetops for a couple of months now. I've been looking at Christmas stockings and I've decided that this is the year I'm going to break the bank and order stockings with all of our names embroidered on them. But there are a few special events that come before Christmas, starting with fall break next week.

I’ve mused a bit about appropriate movie titles if I were shooting a flick about the Jessamine County summer 2010. My first choice, though a bit boring, was “The Long, Hot Summer.” Sadly, Paul Newman and crew already used that in 1958. It was time for more originality. How could I capture the essence of the endless days of ninety-degree heat, lack of rain, crunchy grass and wilted flowers? “Sweltering Sky,” now that has promise! Many times in the past four months I thought, “If only I could have one day when I didn’t sweat through my clothing!

Dorcas and Russell Anderson's three children don't eat regular bread or snack on regular pretzels. They're on a gluten-free diet. Gluten is the protein from wheat and certain other cereals. The Anderson's oldest child, 7-year-old Elijah, started the diet when he was 1. He has Asperger's Syndrome, which is a form of autism. This neurobiological disorder is named for a Viennese physician, Hans Asperger, who in 1944 published a paper that described a pattern of behaviors in several young boys who had normal intelligence and language development, but who also exhibited autistic-like behaviors and marked deficiencies in social and communication skills.
