Thanks are due to the Boyle County Chamber of Commerce for bringing our junior Kentucky senator, Rand Paul, to its Chamber/AT&T Public Policy Series last Wednesday, and to Sen. Paul for working Boyle County into his tight schedule.   During the question and answer session after the talk, I asked Paul about the recently released World Health Organization figures on infant mortality rates around the world. The U.S. has fallen to 41st, behind all other developed countries. We are now tied with Qatar and Croatia.

Few political figures incite more interest than U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and his appearance Thursday in Danville didn't fail to draw crowds of both supporters and detractors. Paul was the featured speaker at the Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce Public Policy Series luncheon at the Danville Country Club. He drew easily the largest crowd yet - well over 100 people -   as well as the first throng of protestors to show up for one of the events. Paul, a figurehead for the insurgent Tea Party movement that carried him and other candidates into office last fall, gave a speech packed with his ideas on issues ranging from entitlement reform to what Paul sees as the onerous effects of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Truth be told, if Dr. Rand Paul had not won his race for the United States Senate against all odds, I probably wouldn’t have read his book or written this column about it. But he is a leader in one of the most fascinating political dramas of the last decade, and when I saw “The Tea Party Goes to Washington” at Barnes & Noble two weeks ago, I couldn’t resist buying a copy and devouring it. One has to respect the abilities of...

Only a few weeks into his six-year term as U.S. Senator from Kentucky, Rand Paul has gone off the tracks. He’d been putting the coal to the engine of the crazy train throughout his campaign, piling one embarrassing media disaster upon another, but his latest foray into the national spotlight should convince those in the give-him-time camp that Paul is out of touch with Kentucky. We had signs of Paul’s dissociative disorder back in the fall when then-candidate Paul said that illegal drug use “wasn’t a pressing issue” in eastern Kentucky, a position with which 60-percent of eastern Kentuckians disagree.

Dear Editor, Once again, I see that some voters either don’t do their research or only listen to a line or two of rhetorical political ads. This seems to be the case with Roger Bowman. Calling Rand Paul an ultra extreme radical seems a bit extreme to me and all those who supported and voted for Mr. Paul. Had Mr. Bowman done his homework, he would know that Rand Paul isn’t radical at all. Rand Paul has moved up to the adult table and has the courage to discuss some of the “big boy” issues; issues that heretofore have been taboo, especially for the weak politicians.

Dear Editor, I did my civic duty on election day and voted. But, I must confess that I held my nose and did so. It has nearly gotten to the point that it is not worth casting a vote anymore. Democrats disappoint me with their spine of Jell-O. Republicans scare me with their extreme radicalism. There is no other choice. Still, I perform my duty as a citizen and vote. I cannot deny that I’m dismayed that the people of Kentucky elected Rand Paul to the U.S. Senate. I have this to say: Rand Paul is an ultra extreme radical.

Dear Editor, I am writing regarding the shameful DSCC-sponsored, Conway-endorsed hit piece on the faith of Rand Paul. I’ve never been as fired up about writing a letter to the editor as I am now, after having seen this thing on the air a few moments ago. It’s pure “jack.” Conway’s ad accuses Paul of being involved in a college “secret society” that ties up women and bows down to, and I quote, “Aqua Buddha.” Sounds interesting, after all, every Buddha I’ve ever seen is orange or brown.

Dear Editor, As I joined the Conway/Paul debate on Sunday night late, I was surprised and confused by Paul’s refusal to shake hands at the end of the debate. It felt immature and petulant. There are those who will say that Attorney General Conway’s ad is “gutter” politics, but I believe that Conway was correct in raising these issues. He was not questioning Dr. Paul’s religion; he was questioning Dr. Paul’s behavior. Paul was a member of the banned NoZe secret society at Baptist-affiliated Baylor University.
