Ray Yarnell's childhood obsession revolved around airplanes. "I watched those Super Connies fly over the backyard when I was a kid," he recalled. "It was an old airliner ... it was a beautiful airplane. " The allure of the "wild blue yonder," didn't go away like many other childhood fascinations. Instead, it's carried over into his adult life. "I've been fascinated with all kinds of aviation since I was a little kid," Yarnell said. "I started, at one time, to get a pilot's license, but it just got too expensive, and I had to quit.

HERB BROCK | May 8, 2006
I dropped by the Danville-Boyle County Humane Society Animal Shelter the other day to check out the kittens in the facility's cat room. I ended up meeting the king of the kennel. His name is R.C., and he's a celebrity at the shelter. I had seen him around on previous visits, but I had never had an official meeting. So I took a break from my kitten shopping while shelter executive director Dan Turcea scurried around the main building looking for him. While Turcea searched, I went into his office to wait.

Tucked away in a shop on fourth street in Nicholasville, Brian Dunaway and David Turner are deep in conversation about blended nitromethane fuels, lap times and an upcoming national race in California. Sitting on the counter in front of them is Turner's ticket west: a one-eighth scale remote-control buggy. The R/C Pro Series is a national point-series league for the mini-vehicles, and Turner, along with Rodney Foley of Hazard, Ky., has qualified for the R/C Pro Series national race to be held in Sun Valley, Calif.
