No one was home at the time, Winchester Fire-EMS Chief Daniel Castle said, but the fire caused significant damage. "We contained everything to the one room," Castle said. "It looks like a bedroom. Traffic on U.S. 27 in Stanford was stalled or diverted for about 90 minutes Monday afternoon, after a Junction City man was seriously injured after he crashed his motorcycle into a car. Orville Vernon, 55, apparently didn't see the car in which Gary Noland and his family were riding as they waited for traffic to clear and turn left onto Goshen Cutoff from the highway. The Noland's were southbound when Vernon hit them from behind at a high rate of speed, witnesses said. Vernon was thrown from the bike and hit the rear window of the Noland's car sending glass over the Noland's son Samuel, said the boy's mother Lisa Noland, but the boy wasn't seriously hurt.

I’ve mused a bit about appropriate movie titles if I were shooting a flick about the Jessamine County summer 2010. My first choice, though a bit boring, was “The Long, Hot Summer.” Sadly, Paul Newman and crew already used that in 1958. It was time for more originality. How could I capture the essence of the endless days of ninety-degree heat, lack of rain, crunchy grass and wilted flowers? “Sweltering Sky,” now that has promise! Many times in the past four months I thought, “If only I could have one day when I didn’t sweat through my clothing!

Two weeks ago, I was transferred. I left our Salida hospital for the big university hospital in Denver via a four and a half-hour ride in an ambulance. It was about 4 p.m. before they loaded me onto a hard, too-short gurney, during which time something deep in the mountains caused my blood pressure to be 190 over 85, causing some worry for the two paramedics as well as for me. I was scared. All I could think of was the way Gene looked standing outside alone, waving goodbye to me as I peered out the back window.
