When I planned to take my grandson hunting during the recent free youth weekend, in my shortsightedness I forgot that it probably wouldn't have been a good idea for him to shoot a high-powered rifle after an eye injury he suffered last year without consulting the specialist who was treating the injury. So I was putting the cart before the horse, but with everything I have seen my grandson do in the past six months I couldn't see how the small recoil of a .243 could have any ill effects on his eye. I have seen C.J. jump from moderate heights that would give him quite a bit more of a jolt than he would have experienced from the rifle recoil.

It's amazing to me how I plan things and seemingly have things all worked out, and how when the time to execute those things I planned draws near, everything just falls apart. I refer to my Free Youth Weekend hunt with my grandson. I had the promise of a rifle to use if I wanted to borrow one, and I had the option to buy one if that was the way I wanted to go. So, what went wrong? "You do remember that Jackson's birthday party is scheduled for that Saturday afternoon, don't you?"

Kevin Manuel, 22, of Shake Rag Road in Waynesburg, was headed out his back door about 6:30 a.m. to pick up his father and brother when his rifle accidentally fired and killed him, said Lincoln County Coroner Bill Demrow. "He was carrying his gear, including a 50-caliber rifle, loaded, which it shouldn't have been, and he either dropped or hooked it on some obstacle in his path," Demrow said.

Gun season is over, so fitting my rifle with another scope would seem to be an exercise in futility at this point, wouldn't it? I hadn't made up my mind about changing the scope and didn't want to change anything before the end of gun season. However, I did have in mind what I wanted to do. I had been foaming at the mouth for a Nikon Monarch scope for about three years, but they were just out of my price range. This scope is waterproof, fog-proof and shock-proof, the latter of which sets this scope apart from a lot of the higher-priced scopes.

The old rifle wasn't what it used to be, and probably not what it will someday be, but Jimmy Caudill used it Thursday night at the Bluegrass Heritage Museum to aim back into history. Caudill was raised at the site of historic Strode Station and his grandparents and parents operated Caudill Implement Co., which they acquired from the McCormick brothers. The company made bluegrass seed harvesters. The speaker, who worked for East Kentucky Power Cooperative for 38 years, is a farmer.
