Jason K. Oliver has appealed a 35-year prison sentence handed down Feb. 24 for the first-degree assault and first-degree robbery of a Mr. Taxi minivan driver in September 2010. Oliver was found guilty by a jury in January. According to a letter written by Oliver's mother, Charla Harris, before the trial began, the prosecuting attorney offered him a 15-year plea deal that he declined, touting his innocence. In a last-ditch effort, Oliver's attorneys, Brent and Bruce L. Cadwell, motioned for dismissal Jan. 23 on the basis that convicting Oliver on both assault and robbery was double jeopardy, since the first-degree assault charge was included in the first-degree robbery charge.
