Centre College made a habit of making the most of its opponents' mistakes in its home opener. Centre turned four of Rose Hulman's five turnovers into touchdowns Saturday night as they rolled to a 49-21 victory at Farris Stadium. From muffed punts to fumbles, Rose-Hulman repeatedly put the ball on the ground, while Centre gave it up only once late in the game. “That's always a good thing to have,” Centre coach Andy Frye said. Especially good, he said, because Rose-Hulman exposed other things he said the Colonels need to work on. In fact, the two teams weren't far from even in the offensive statistics, where they were separated by 22 yards.

As a longtime subscriber to the belief that football teams make their greatest improvements between the first and second weeks of the season, Andy Frye already knows when he wants to see when Centre College takes the field for game two. The Colonels' coach will be looking for signs that his team is building on its season-opening win when they host Rose-Hulman at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Farris Stadium. And that means that while countering their opponent's strategy is important, refining their own game is more so. “Our big emphasis right now is obviously lining up against Rose-Hulman, but what we're really focusing on is let's be the best we can be at what Centre does,” Frye said.

Katie McKenna was not pleased with her freshman season. Despite leading the Centre College women's golf team in scoring (88.12 per 18-hole round) and helping the Colonels break into the top 50 in the NCAA Division III for the first time, McKenna said she could have had a much better year. "I knew there were a lot of things I had to work on," she said. "I needed to improve a lot on my short game. And getting greens in regulation, that was a real weakness of mine last year. I've done a little better this year.

For 25 seniors, it may be a day in the life as a member of the Centre College Colonels that they will cherish for a lifetime. Centre closed its 2005 football season with a 27-16 win over Rose-Hulman Saturday at Farris Stadium, the last time these two teams will clash in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play as the Engineers will leave the conference next year for the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The seniors that stayed the four years with Centre helped lead the Colonels to a 25-15 record, including a share of the SCAC Championship in 2003 when they finished 8-2. "This has been an amazing experience," said senior running back Adam Blandford, who came up 20 yards short of becoming the sixth player in school history to rush for 1,000 yards.

Freshman Allison Terry managed to get a pass that freshman Erin Menard converted into a goal to give the Centre College women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over host Hendrix Sunday in Conway, Ark. "Allison Terry was very dangerous both halves. She was able to get around defenders and cause havoc," Centre coach Jay Hoffman said. "In the 53rd minute, she got around the corner and played a beautiful ball to Erin Menard, who finished the play. It was really good work by both of them.
