RUSSELL SPRINGS - Casey County's volleyball team lost 25-18, 19-25, 25-23 Monday at Russell County. "We just had way too many errors in the game," Casey coach Allen Patterson said. Kelli Patten had eight assists and six blocks while Ellen Hogue had five kills, two blocks, one assist and one ace. Megan Byrd contributed eight assists and Felicia Slone had three assists and one ace. Bethany Snow had five kills and McKenzee Weddle added 10 assists, four kills and three blocks.

LIBERTY - Ashley Godbey was named Miss Casey Teen at the annual Casey County Apple Festival pageant Monday at Casey County High School. Godbey, 14, is the daughter of Greg and Betsy Godbey of Yosemite. She will represent the county in the Miss Kentucky Fair Teen pageant Oct. 22-23 in Louisville. Runners-up, listed in order of finish, were: Natalie Wesley, 13, daughter of Andy and Candy Wesley of Liberty; Brittany Lasley, 13, daughter of George and Dena Garrett of Dunnville; Kara Weddle, 14, daughter of David and Barbara Weddle of Liberty; and Brittany Spears, 13, daughter of Rodney and Rebecca Spears of Bethelridge.

RUSSELL SPRINGS - Andrew McCloud rushed for 288 yards and three touchdowns and returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for another touchdown to lead visiting Mercer County to a 31-16 victory over Russell County here Friday. "Our offensive line did a nice job executing and Andrew looks like he's finally getting well and back in a groove," Mercer coach Duane Hammons said. McCloud, who had 39 rushes, scored on runs of 1 and 88 yards in the first half and had a 4-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter.

HARRODSBURG - Even if it was winless Taylor County that yielded 54 points to Russell County, it was still enough offense by Russell to worry Mercer County coach Duane Hammons going into Friday's game at Russell Springs. "When you put 50 points on the scoreboard, you are doing something right," said Hammons. "They were able to score a lot of points and even though they also gave up 32, most of those points came late against reserves. Basically, the game was total domination by Russell County.

LIBERTY - A Pulaski County teen was named Miss Casey County Fair during a pageant Monday. Brittney Collett Shoap, 19, daughter of Mark Shoap and Tammy Bastin, both of Somerset, received the crown. Iris Nicole Peyton, 18-year-old daughter of Bill and Beverly Peyton of Hustonville, was the only contestant from Casey County that placed in the pageant. She was second runner-up. Other runners-up were: Skye Squires, 16, daughter of Dwayne Squires and Donna Patterson of Campbellsville, first; Alison Renea Cain, 20, daughter of Joe and Peggy Cain of Russell Springs, third; and Britney Susan Hadley, 19, daughter of Darrell and Patsy Hadley of Jamestown, fourth.

Birth to 6 months: Girls, Jasmine Nevada Peavey, 5-month-old daughter of Misty and Allan Peavey, Somerset; and Bralyn Grace Long, 1-month-old daughter of Brandon and Chasity Long, Liberty. Boys, Cody Allen Luttrell, 6-month-old son of Joseph and Tonya Luttrell, Russell Springs; Dalton Wilson, 5-month-old son of Dennis and Deana Wilson, Columbia; and Caleb Andrew Patten, 6-month-old son of Ricky and Twila Patten, Bardstown.

RUSSELL SPRINGS - Danville couldn't cash in on what turned out to be its final opportunity, but Pulaski Southwestern was able to do just that. The Warriors knocked in the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning Wednesday to beat Danville 2-1 in the second semifinal of the 12th Region Tournament. Southwestern (30-10) will face South Laurel, which defeated Garrard County 3-1, in the championship game tonight. With the game tied at 1, Southwestern's Laura Wright started the home half of the eighth with a grounder to third.

RUSSELL SPRINGS - Garrard County couldn't get a hit off Mary Beth Pennington, but the Golden Lions still got a win over Boyle County in the 12th Region Tournament here Tuesday. Garrard beat Boyle 1-0 behind the one-hit pitching of Tiffany Meadors to advance to tonight's semifinals against South Laurel at 6. The other semifinal will pair Danville, a 14-4 winner over Mercer County, against Pulaski Southwestern at about 7:30. "It was probably our best overall defensive game of the year," Garrard coach Jeff Meadors said.

LIBERTY - Republicans captured the most votes in the May Primary Tuesday in Casey County and did it with very few voters at the polls. Unofficial totals showed that 1,462 of the 10,614 registered voters were at the 16 precincts scattered throughout the county. Vernie McGaha, a retired educator of Russell Springs, easily won another four-year term in the state's 15th Senatorial District, which includes Casey, Adair, Pulaski and Russell counties. In Casey County, he captured 841 votes while his opponent, David Carr, also a Republican, got 341 votes.

The Danville girls and boys each took first place Wednesday in a three-team meet at KSD. Elizabeth Reynolds and Kasey Toy each had two individual wins and also swam on two winning relays. Jacob Reynolds and Eric Smiley won two individual events and both also swam on the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. Boyle wins At Wilmore, the Boyle County boys and girls swept East and West Jessamine. The Boyle girls were first with 122 points, ahead of West (72)
