The Nicholasville Board of Adjustment on Monday approved a permit to allow a Nicholasville woman to operate a salon out of her home, as well as a permit to allow a homeowner to build a fence closer to the street than allowed by the applicable zoning ordinance. The board denied a request by a homeowner to build a garage larger than allowed by ordinance. Yadira Garcia, 109 Woodlawn Court, asked for permission to operate a hair salon by appointment only from her home. She will have only one salon chair, with no more than two appointments at a time.

In salons, there are standards noises going around: hairspray being spritzed, hairdryers loudly humming, and people talking and laughing. Despite growing up around hairdressers and being a hairdresser for four years, Gloria Kriausky doesn't know these sounds. That's because Kriausky is deaf. “My family thought that I was born with hearing, that I went deaf later, but I don't think so, I think I was born deaf. They didn't have the kind of technology that they have today, for screenings,” she said, with the translation of Jennifer Paycheck, a certified interpreter through Central Kentucky Interpreter Referral. For Kriausky, this “isn't a hindrance at all,” according to Shelia Curtis, owner of The Salon, where Kriausky works.

The shop was opened by Combs’ great-grandmother, Marietta Hager, in the 1930s, and it has stayed in the family through Combs’ grandmother, Vedis Reynolds, and Combs’ mother, Marilyn Welch. “I’ve always wanted to take it over, so I just made the decision that now was the time to make some transitions,” Combs said.
