“You can call it mountain music, call it old-time gospel music … but you will be blessed,” Mayor Ed Burtner said when he introduced the The Isaacs before their concert Saturday night at Central Baptist Church. The band then launched into a lively medley that included such gospel classics as “I’ll Fly Away” and “There’s Power in the Blood.” The Isaacs, top national recording artists in their genre, performed to benefit the Clark County Service Unit of The Salvation Army, a Christian charity that helps victims of floods, tornadoes and other disasters, provides Christmas gifts for children of incarcerated parents and does many other things to help the unfortunate.

The local Salvation Army may be forced to cut services as it continues to experience a steep decrease in donations in its kettle campaign. The campaign, which involves placing red kettles outside stores along with a person ringing a bell, provides most of the funding for local Salvation Army programs throughout the whole year.   In Fayette, Scott and Jessamine counties, kettle campaign donations are down $20,000 this year from where they were last year at this time, according to Debbie Ashcraft, associate area coordinator for the Salvation Army.

'Tis the season that bells will be ringing and red kettles appearing outside several places of business in Nicholasville. The Salvation Army kicked off its annual Red Kettle Campaign across Kentucky, including Jessamine County. Maj. Debra Ashcraft said this year's goal in Jessamine County is the same as last year's - $50,000. “We really haven't raised the goal, and, of course, we'd like to see more dollars because the need is great,” Ashcraft said. Ashcraft said because of the sluggish economy and no new locations for kettles and ringers, the goal was kept the same.

When American Red Cross reorganized and scaled back its presence in local communities in 2011, there was worry about who would fill the void in helping those in the immediate aftermath of a fire or other crisis. After some initial confusion, it appears that the agencies involved in providing aid to disaster victims have learned to work together and created a patchwork of responders that are meeting the needs of those in the their hour of need. “At first, I was kind of aggravated and felt we weren't getting the support we needed,” said Danville Fire Chief Woody Ball.

Salvation Army workers and volunteers wrapped up their Angel Tree gift giving Friday, able to meet this season's goals thanks to an 11th-hour flurry of generosity by local residents and businesses. “We will have had 372 families come through, which represents just over 750 kids,” Lt. Jason Burns said Friday, as the last of the Angel Tree gifts were being distributed. Burns and his wife, Lt. Bethany Burns, lead the Danville branch of The Salvation Army.  For much of December, it looked as if the Salvation Army's annual effort might fall short of its goal, but residents stepped up over the last days of the campaign and helped grant area children a Christmas they may not have otherwise experienced.

As children we anticipated the arrival of the holiday season. We looked forward to school festivities, the church play and all the fun activities surrounding the holidays. As adults we may be feeling totally different about the holiday season. Often the pressure to complete so many tasks in such a short time can be stressful. Adding to demands of our alread busy schedule can sometimes cause anxiety and stressed. Depression may also occur with the recent loss of a love one, if a person is isolated, or if relationships have been strained in the extended family.

There are hundreds of children in Jessamine County that need an “Angel” this holiday season, children who otherwise may not enjoy a wholesome meal or even receive a single gift on Christmas morning. “Last year there were 660 children in Jessamine that were a part of the Angel Tree program,” Salvation Army Maj. Debra Ashcraft said, “children in families that may not be able to afford a meal or to get them a gift, and many of them weren't adopted last year. We're still tallying how many will be eligible for 'adoption' this year; it may be even more.” Fortunately for the children who were not “adopted” or donated to last year, The Salvation Army of Kentucky stepped up using funds from the Red Kettle Campaign, more than $2,000 spent in Jessamine County alone, to ensure that each of those children received something on Christmas morning, but the toll weighed heavy on the nonprofit organization.

For some, having a traditional Thanksgiving dinner is not an option, either because they cannot afford it or they have no one with whom to celebrate. A group of volunteers from area churches and organizations has been striving to change that. The eighth annual serving of the meal to the community will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at Lexington Avenue Baptist Church. The brainchild of two friends, Doris Cessna and MaryAnn Teater, the Community Thanksgiving began with the help of their respective churches, Lexington Avenue Baptist and Calvary Baptist, after the two women felt led to use their Thanksgiving to serve others.
