What do you think of when you hear the phrase, “School Spirit”?  Most often what comes to mind are actions associated with school sporting events and support of the teams. For example, at the basketball games, students sit in a pep section, they dress in the school colors and cheer the team to victory.  When the school band plays the school's fight song, everyone joins in with clapping and cheering. That's a classic example of school spirit! The positive thing about this kind of school spirit is that it is contagious and, most importantly, it leads to a strong sense of school pride.  Pride in our school is something we need to intentionally develop.

Dear Editor, When you grow up in "Title Town" you learn to have a lot of support for your high school football team, whether it's Danville or Boyle County. As students who attend Danville, we undoubtedly support our Ads against Boyle County each year with strong school spirit. Although we believe that a healthy competition between two rival schools always makes the game more intense for the players and fun for the fans, we disagree with the extent that "school spirit" has gone to this year.

Dear Editor, I am a Boyle County senior girl who has painted up and showed school spirit just like senior girls years before me and years to come. Recently, a letter was written to the editor about how trashy all the girls looked and how badly we made our school look at the Boyle-Danville game. But that is not why I'm writing. I'm writing regarding the Boyle vs. Lexington Catholic game where some men and women of Boyle County were the trashiest of all. After we beat Lexington Catholic, as I was walking out of the stands, I heard older adults screaming and yelling at the Lexington team as they were kneeling on the field to listen to their coach.

Brian Conley, computer graphics instructor and soccer coach, was looking for way to generate school spirit - and get his class pumped up about assignments. Student Eric Carey just liked to create artwork on his computer. Carey's design for a new Boyle County High School flag was chosen by his fellow students as the best overall in a contest held last year, and the end result of his work was presented to the school this week. Gina Webb, a seamstress who has sewn numerous flags for display at the Perryville Battlefield, finished the first incarnation of what Conley hopes will be an ubiquitous symbol of school spirit.

When former George Rogers Clark High School students look back on their high school careers, senior advisers Nancy Wills and Ruthann Sharrock hope they have good memories of all their old school traditions. That's why the two, along with fellow senior adviser Anne Baldwin, are willing to put in so much time and effort to make special events, like the homecoming activities that kick-off tonight, so meaningful. "We hope we're making lifetime memories for these kids so they can look back and remember what a good time they had," Sharrock said, who has been a senior adviser for six years.

LOUISVILLE - Eric Smiley, a junior at Danville High School, was covered in goose bumps and shivering as he stuffed Hot Hands hand warmers into his black gloves. It might have helped warm him up if he hadn't been shirtless in 30-degree weather. Despite fellow students and friends telling Smiley he was insane for going shirtless, he said it's all about showing school spirit. He said he and his friends went shirtless to many DHS football games, especially the important ones. Friday's game was the most important of the year.

Casey County High School appears to have found a good way to look to the future without becoming embroiled in a divisive controversy over the past. As part of an overall effort to boost school spirit and highlight positive changes at the school, students came up with 37 designs for a new school flag to replace the Confederate Battle Flag. Students voted on the designs, and they have been narrowed down to three. Eventually, full-sized replicas of the three designs will be created, and students and faculty will pick the school's new symbol.

Certified staff and students have been named to committees for assessment, attendance, communication and climate and culture, Principal Tim Goodlett told the county Board of Education Monday. "The committees meet twice monthly and are truly making a difference," Goodlett said. Goodlett said one way to get better attendance is by rewarding students with perfect attendance and no tardies for a two-week period with free admission to one ballgame.

They've spent most of the summer on the road impressing coaches such as John Calipari of Kentucky and Mark Turgeon of Maryland along with numerous high school basketball recruiting analysts. So what did twins Aaron and Andrew Harrison do one night last week after they got back home to Richmond, Texas? “They were here supporting the girls in their first volleyball game,” said Travis High School principal JJ Kyle. Now Lambert and approximately 27 other drummers will become the stars of the show as GRC unveils its new drum line on Saturday. “We’ve never done anything like that before, never even tried anything like this before,” Lambert said. When the school facilities construction committee began working on a new building plan a few years ago, the district's most dire need was to renovate or replace some older elementary schools that were in poor condition. The committee, and subsequently the school board, however, veered sharply off course by deciding to build a new high school first. Tonight the Clark County Board of Education has an opportunity to correct its mistake by reordering its priorities. First, let's look at where we are and how we got here.
