Coming off of a tough one-point loss to Olgethorpe University Friday, the Centre College women were determined to finish the season on a high note here against Sewanee Sunday. While it was a battle to the end, Centre (6-16, 3-11 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) was able to hold off the Sewanee (9-15l, 3-11) and secured a 63-56 victory over its conference rival. "This win was huge. We had a lot of young girls this year and we are not losing any seniors from this team.

SEWANEE, Tenn. - Centre College got another big scoring game from Matt Nestheide to turn back host University of the South (Sewanee) 80-68 here Sunday. It was the sixth straight win for Centre (10-3) and gave the Colonels a weekend sweep of Southern College Athletic Conference road games. Nestheide, who had 26 points in Friday's win at Oglethorpe, came back with a 27-point performance against Sewanee. He was 6-for-8 from the field, including 5-for-7 from 3-point range, and 10-for-13 at the foul line in 37 minutes of play.

The Centre College women's golf team had the top five scorers Saturday and won the Old Bridge Invitational by 80 strokes over Sewanee and Cumberlands. Jennifer Jackson shot an 83 for the Colonels, followed by Marissa Cianchetti (88) and Katie McKenna (90). Sarah Fisher tied for fifth (95) and Cat Molnar (101) was ninth. Centre won with a score of 352. The Centre men's golf team had an individual first from Derek Tingle (72) and finished third as a team. Cumberlands and Transylvania tied at 304 and Cumberland won in a playoff.

Centre College junior linebacker Matt Johnson has been named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference's Football Defensive Player-of-the-Week for his efforts in Centre's 14-0 win over Sewanee on Saturday. Johnson posted a season-high 15 tackles, including five solo and 10 assists in the shutout. He also had a sack, 1.5 tackles for losses, broke up a pass and had an interception. Johnson currently leads the SCAC in tackles (54) and is averaging 10.8 stops per game. He led the league in tackles last season as a sophomore with 112 stops.
