Jimmy Scaggs Jr., 22, of 27 Oliver St., told the judge Thursday that he was extremely intoxicated when the shooting occurred Aug. 4 and his girlfriend was injured. The victim, Kimberly Owens, told police that Scaggs had threatened to kill her once that night and held a gun to her head. Later that night, she said, he pulled a gun out and it discharged as she turned away. The bullet struck her arm and penetrated her chest.

LEXINGTON — Garrett Dean is a die-hard Kentucky basketball fan, and even though he was just 9 years old at the time John Calipari was hired as the Wildcats’ new coach, he was thrilled with the hire. “I just knew he was a good coach,” Dean said. He never anticipated then that about 18 months later he would be on the Rupp Arena court as part of Big Blue Madness, but there he was Friday participating in a free-throw contest after earning the right during Calipari’s summer camp at Danville.

STANFORD - The Harrodsburg man who was wounded after shooting at a Stanford police officer outside Walmart has been released from custody after being discharged from the hospital and posting bond. Jackie Murphy, who is charged with the attempted murder of officer Tim Morris, posted a $200,000 property bond Friday, the day he was released from the medical facility at the Kentucky State Reformatory at LaGrange, said Lisa Lamb, spokeswoman for the Corrections Cabinet. Murphy, 71, had been treated at the state facility since the Aug. 20 shooting, when he was shot four times below the waist by Morris after allegedly opening fire on the officer in the Walmart parking lot. Murphy's attorney, David Marshall of Nicholasville, entered a “not guilty” plea on his client's behalf during an arraignment last week in Lincoln District Court.

JUNCTION CITY - Authorities are looking for a man accused of shooting at an occupied vehicle Wednesday night, Boyle County Sheriff Marty Elliott said. About 10:30 p.m., a 19-year-old man was driving south on U.S. 127 when another driver in a black pickup truck began following him. The truck pulled alongside the man and swerved at him several times, according to Elliott. The suspect then allegedly chased the man through Junction City and nearly caused an accident. In Alum Springs, the victim's vehicle swerved off the road and into a residential yard.

Four Winchester Police officers heard the screams and gunshots somewhere inside the new George Rogers Clark High School. Tightly grouped in a tactical formation, they started moving, almost running, down the hall past the library and toward the noise. “Go right,” a voice yelled when the unit neared an intersection. “Down the long hallway. Down the long hallway.” The screaming got louder and louder as they went down the hall at speed. Another burst of gunfire, and the gunman was face down on the floor being handcuffed.

STANFORD - When Ryan Shangraw and Bo Upton were gunned down nearly seven years ago in a trailer near Hubble, it was Jamarkos Campbell who did most of the shooting, a prosecutor said Friday. Commonwealth's Attorney Eddy Montgomery identified Campbell as the "main shooter" for the first time publicly during a pretrial conference in Lincoln Circuit Court. Campbell, 23, will be the first of five Richmond men to go on trial for the 2002 murders of Upton and Shangraw. The date is set for April 6, and Montgomery expects the trial to go off as scheduled.

The pistol competitions held every other Thursday night at the Boyle Fish and Game Club are just for fun, and they can teach a little handgun discipline in the process. You are not going to win anything, except maybe bragging rights that you had the best score and the best time. These shoot scenarios are patterned after those practiced by the International Defensive Pistol Association and always involve several different scenarios in which the shooters compete. There is always a reload situation in each scenario.
