LEXINGTON — Garrett Dean is a die-hard Kentucky basketball fan, and even though he was just 9 years old at the time John Calipari was hired as the Wildcats’ new coach, he was thrilled with the hire. “I just knew he was a good coach,” Dean said. He never anticipated then that about 18 months later he would be on the Rupp Arena court as part of Big Blue Madness, but there he was Friday participating in a free-throw contest after earning the right during Calipari’s summer camp at Danville.

Four Winchester Police officers heard the screams and gunshots somewhere inside the new George Rogers Clark High School. Tightly grouped in a tactical formation, they started moving, almost running, down the hall past the library and toward the noise. “Go right,” a voice yelled when the unit neared an intersection. “Down the long hallway. Down the long hallway.” The screaming got louder and louder as they went down the hall at speed. Another burst of gunfire, and the gunman was face down on the floor being handcuffed.

STANFORD - When Ryan Shangraw and Bo Upton were gunned down nearly seven years ago in a trailer near Hubble, it was Jamarkos Campbell who did most of the shooting, a prosecutor said Friday. Commonwealth's Attorney Eddy Montgomery identified Campbell as the "main shooter" for the first time publicly during a pretrial conference in Lincoln Circuit Court. Campbell, 23, will be the first of five Richmond men to go on trial for the 2002 murders of Upton and Shangraw. The date is set for April 6, and Montgomery expects the trial to go off as scheduled.

The pistol competitions held every other Thursday night at the Boyle Fish and Game Club are just for fun, and they can teach a little handgun discipline in the process. You are not going to win anything, except maybe bragging rights that you had the best score and the best time. These shoot scenarios are patterned after those practiced by the International Defensive Pistol Association and always involve several different scenarios in which the shooters compete. There is always a reload situation in each scenario.

STANFORD - A Harrodsburg man who allegedly shot at a Stanford police officer in front of Walmart in August will likely not go to trial on May 2 as had been planned. Instead, the trial has been delayed while Jackie Murphy, 71, undergoes a psychiatric evaluation to determine his competency to stand trial for attempted murder. The evaluation could take up to two months. According to court documents, the competency evaluation is necessary because Murphy plans to use "evidence of a mental disease or defect" as a defense during his trial.

He is 3-point shooter and is a great free throw shooter, too. But he showed he can score in other ways. “I think he can be a good defender when he wants to be and when he chases down the ball screens.
