George Rogers Clark High School students who knew Mckenna Hatchett created a sign with messages in her memory that now hangs in the entrance foyer of the school. Mckenna, a junior varsity soccer player and freshman at GRC, died Tuesday of a staph infection. The sign was an outlet to help her friends and fellow soccer players cope with her death. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Mount Zion Christian Church. James Mann/jmann@winchestersun.com

East Jessamine's Ashley Edwards will continue her soccer career at Asbury College in the fall. "She's going to bring a lot of flexibility and depth," Asbury soccer coach Paul Nesselroade said. "I think there's probably six different positions she can play on the field, which is very helpful. " Edwards was a part of East's 14-4-3 season last fall under the direction of first-year coach Alex Shearer. She will likely play midfield or defense for the Eagles. As the Eagles try to continue the team's upward momentum, Nesselroade said Edwards' strong work ethic will be a bonus.

Some Harrodsburg children got a little European flavoring thrown into their diet of summer soccer this week. Eurotech Camps and Tours, a company which sends European soccer coaches to its camps around the country, stopped in Harrodsburg for a three-day camp that ends today. Bruno D'Abramo, a teacher and soccer coach who lives in Winnipeg, Canada, but is originally from Italy, was joined by fellow coaches Chris Burling of England and Leon Bosch of Holland for the camp, which attracted nearly 60 kids up to age 14. "We're trying to get the U.S. kids to see how things are done elsewhere.

While the rest of the state might view this as rivalry week because of the Kentucky-Louisville football game, for this area rivalry week for a lot of different reasons. ESPN and the national publications might not make the games, but for area sports fans there are plenty of can't-miss attractions this week. Obviously, the biggest is the Danville-Boyle County football game at Admiral Stadium Friday. The Rebels lost 45-13 to Henry Clay Friday, but don't let that loss fool you. No area team would beat the Blue Devils.

The first players were due to arrive in less than two hours, but Jeb Burch was calm. Busy, but calm. Burch was wrapping up a series of meetings with his staff at the Centre College soccer camp, going over the necessary details before the camp got under way Thursday afternoon. It was nothing Burch hasn't done before. After several years as Centre's men's coach and as director of this camp, he has a pretty good idea of what works and what doesn't at the area's largest sports camp.

LANCASTER - The finest hours of the Garrard County boys soccer program weren't that long ago. But they are a distant memory for a rebuilding team that had to struggle earlier this month just to field a team. Just two years removed from a run of four straight winning seasons, Garrard is facing a very different kind of season this fall. "It's been a complete rebuilding year," coach Michael Gaffney said. That surely isn't the kind of year veterans like Matthew Adams were hoping for. But Adams, a senior midfielder, and his teammates were surprised to find that their ranks were surprisingly thin in the preseason.

The East Jessamine boys soccer team couldn't get its offense going against a strong Lexington Catholic club Tuesday night and fell in the second round of the district tournament, 4-1. The two teams traded opportunities all night, but the Knights (10-6-2) were able to find the back of the net more often than the Jaguars (10-3-5). "We didn't finish real well tonight, but Catholic has a very good defense and they played us very well in the back, so hat's off to them," East Coach Tom Morgan said.

West Jessamine senior Ashley Cobane left the hospital just more than a week prior to the Colts girls soccer rematch against Woodford County Monday. Cobane answered with the game's first goal as the Colts won, 2-0, at home. There was doubt Cobane would even play soccer. She suffered pain in her lower abdominal area and was admitted to the hospital last month. She spent nine days there before being released Aug. 29. During her stay she had two surgeries. Last week she returned to school.

After a string of three straight wins, the Lincoln County soccer Patriots were dealt a crushing blow on their home field. The visiting Trojans of Monticello delivered the hit Monday by not only beating the soccer Patriots, but shutting them out 2-0. Monticello, which is playing its first season of varsity soccer, outshot Lincoln 29-15 to earn the win ? it's first ever for the school. Lincoln coach Wendy Peters was not happy with Monday's outcome, and it wasn't because the Trojan program is new. "We didn't want to play.
