The Stanford Elementary School Quick Recall team, coached by Susan Johnson and Missy Harmon, had only one loss during this season. The Future Problem Solving Team coach was Jennifer Stamper. In District Governor's Cup competition, the Quick Recall Team and the Future Problem Solving Team each received second place. Individual winners at the District Governor's Cup were Blake Henderson (math first place), Joe Johnson (social studies first place and science fourth place), Mallory Bridgman (language arts second place)

Lee and Donetta Caudill of Winchester announce the engagement of their daughter, Desiree Brittany Caudill, to Ollie C. Rowe II, son of Ollie Rowe of Paintsville and Jettie Tuttle of Pikeville.The bride-elect is the granddaughter of John and Evelynn Caudill of Mount Sterling. A 2002 graduate of George Rogers Clark High School, the bride-elect will graduate May 12 from Morehead State University with a B.A. in elementary education. She is an alumna member of the Epsilon Sigma Chapter of Gamma Phi Beta.

The Hogsett Elementary School Quick Recall Team placed second in the quick recall bracket at the District Governor's Cup Competition on March 3 at Woodlawn Elementary School. The members of the quick recall team are Antony Damico, Katlyn Parks, Amber Holly, Ian Scott, Joshua Portwood, Tre Scharklet, Hannah Contini, Tanner Estes, Sydney Mullins, Daitorcha Johnson, John Knight and C.J. Dunaway. The following students completed content area tests, each placing in the top five: Damico, fifth in mathematics; Parks, third in composition; Mullins, fifth in arts and humanities; Portwood, fifth in social studies; and Scott, second in science.

Special to the SunBehind a Quick Recall tournament win and Sylas Kern's two first-place finishes in written assessment, the Providence Academic Team won the Governor's Cup Region 24 championship Saturday in Paris. The regional competition is the highest level for elementary students. Competing against 13 schools, Providence had eight written assessment and composition winners and finished third in Future Problem Solving, along with winning the Quick Recall tournament. More than 100 students from schools in Clark, Bath, Bourbon and Montgomery counties participated.

After 22 years working as a teacher, coach and dean for Danville schools, Win Smith has moved into the principal's office at Danville High School. Smith had been serving as interim principal at DHS since the beginning of the school year, but the interim tag was removed last week when the school's Site Based Decision Making Council decided to put him in the position permanently. Smith replaces Joseph Payne, who took a leave of absence during the summer to care for an ailing family member and then resigned the position in November.

LIBERTY - Casey County schools almost are ready to begin random drug testing for students and school staff. Winter Huff, attorney for the Casey County Board of Education, told the board Monday that she has reviewed the contract with Premier Drug Testing and will make necessary changes. Drug testing can begin after this. Gwen Marcum assumed duties as health nurse/health coordinator this week and will assist with the testing. She replaces Kay King, who retired last month. The board honored 100 students who scored proficient and distinguished on state tests.

The message that Anthony Redfeather Nava wants to pass on to children is that they should be proud of their ancestors and be proud of who they are. A member of the Pascua Yaqui tribe in Arizona, Nava travels to schools to teach students about Native American culture. He visited Trapp, Pilot View, Fannie Bush, Central, Strode Station, Shearer, Providence and Hannah McClure elementary schools last week. Bringing along his traveling Indigenous Peoples Sensory Museum, Nava provided the children with nine tables covered in drums, whistles, shoes, arrowheads and other artifacts, all of which they were allowed to pick up and touch.

Schools in Jessamine County are making strides, but according to standardized testing results released last Thursday, five still aren't meeting goals set forth by the state. The Common-wealth Accountability Testing System tests Kentucky students yearly, and the state assesses the scores of each school and district on a two-year cycle. Four of Jessamine's five elementary schools performed well enough to meet their goals, but Warner Elementary, East and West Jessamine Middle schools, and East and West Jessamine High schools fell short.

Dear Editor, I teach third grade at Junction City Elementary School. Last Friday, we experienced an emergency evacuation of our school to Boyle County High School due to a gas line leak. My students wanted to write letters of appreciation to those who helped make them feel safe during the day. As teachers we are always trying to connect our students to real life experiences and we are looking for real world writing. Here are a few of the letters the third graders at Junction City Elementary wrote during social studies as we reflected on the topic of good citizenship and community workers.
