Asbury College is pleased to announce the addition of the master of social work degree. The M.S.W. degree will be offered beginning in August 2008. The program offers a concentration in child and family services preparing advanced professionals for service in both public and private settings. Dr. William Descoteaux, M.S.W. director, said the program "is a continuation of Asbury College's historic commitment to prepare persons to transform the world. Graduates of the master of social work program will provide support for children and families to grow toward their full potential and to experience meaningful and quality lives.

Bill Day and Chelsea Rose Hopkins, both of Crab Orchard, announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Jessica Marie Day to Joshua Wayne Fletcher, the son of Jean and James Atkins of Florence and Dallas and Billie Ann Fletcher of Stanford. The bride-elect, a 2000 graduate of Lincoln County High School, 2005 graduate of the University of Kentucky, is currently pursuing a Masters of Social Work degree at UK. She is employed by the University of Kentucky College of Social Work.

Beazley's great-granddaughters graduate from middle, high schools MacKenzie Greene and Kendall Greene, great-granddaughters of Jesse Beazley of Nicholasville, graduated from high school and middle school, respectively. MacKenzie Greene graduated from Lafayette High School in Lexington on June 4. Her parents hosted a graduation party that was attended by several people from Nicholasville, including James and Jeannie Beazley, Halee and Christian, Mark, Brenda Beazley, Jesse Beazley, Mickey Houp and granddaughter Samantha Thompson, and Presley Houp.

Laura Meyers occasionally receives phone calls in the middle of the night, but she doesn't mind the interrupted sleep. The senior is a volunteer for the Bluegrass Rape Crisis Center. Meyers, a social work major, completed three different practicums for her major. She has worked for the Center for Women and Children, the Bluegrass Rape Crisis Center and the Human Trafficking Task Force. As part of her practicum at the rape crisis center, Meyers was on call from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. a few nights per week.

West Jessamine senior Lisa Troyer signed a letter of intent last month to continue her education and volleyball career at Asbury University in the fall. Troyer, one of only two seniors on this year's team, signed with the Eagles on April 27. “The volleyball team (at Asbury) is a really great team and I'm planning on double majoring in social work and adventure leadership,” Troyer said. “Both of those (majors) are really good at Asbury as well.” The Lady Eagles are coming off a 42-11 season and a trip to the NCCAA National Tournament.

George Randall "Randy" Johnson, 58, husband of Gwen Root, passed away Wed., Nov. 19 at his home in Nashville, Tenn. He was born on June 17, 1950, in Lexington to the late Zach-ary Taylor Johnson, Jr. and wife Helyn Laybourn John-son of Wilmore. Randy graduated from Jessamine County High School in 1968 and from Eastern Kentucky University, where he earned a master's degree in Criminal Justice. Most recently he served as Director of the Training Resource Center within the Department of Social Work at Western Kentucky University.
