STANFORD - Baseball fans had to do a double take when they looked at the scoreboard Monday after Lincoln pinch hitter Tyler Poynter banged out a grand slam home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Was the scoreboard correct? Had the Patriots actually battled their way back from an 11-1 deficit to challenge Somerset 11-10? The answer to both questions was yes. Lincoln had almost erased the 10-run deficit with nine runs over the fifth and sixth innings, however, the Patriots came up short in the rally effort, falling 13-10 to the visiting Briar Jumpers.

Nick Serey pitched a complete game Wednesday as Danville won the 12th Region All “A” Classic for the 10th time in 11 years with a 6-3 victory over Somerset at Somerset. Serey outpitched Somerset ace Charlie Dishman to give Danville (12-6) the win in the All “A” regional, which consisted of a single game this season. The Admirals will host a sectional game in about two weeks, and the winner of that game will advance to the statewide All “A” Classic on May 4-5 in Lexington.

The George Rogers Clark softball team was shorthanded but came close to notching a victory over visiting Somerset Tuesday afternoon at Cardinal Heights. The Briar Jumpers broke a 1-1 deadlock with three runs in the top of the eighth and held on for a 4-3 win over the Lady Cardinals in Clark's only contest during spring break week. Both teams opened the eighth inning with a runner at second base as part of an international rule enforced during extra innings. Somerset crossed the plate three times, while Clark mustered a pair of runs on a double by Kolbi Mitchell in the eighth inning.

STANFORD - Things can change pretty quickly in postseason basketball - sometimes for the better, sometimes not. Three days after a sudden and dramatic reversal of fortune sent the Mercer County boys into the regional semifinals, another change sent them packing Friday night. Unable to replicate the performance that produced a dramatic first-round upset, Mercer saw its season end with a 58-48 loss to Somerset in a boys 12th Region Tournament semifinal at Lincoln County. The Titans couldn't score from the perimeter as they had done Tuesday in their victory over Southwestern, and they were reluctant to go inside against the larger Briar Jumpers.

SOMERSET - The Lincoln County girls took the first step toward defending their 12th Region title as they knocked off Somerset. The Lady Patriots jumped out to a 23-17 lead in the first quarter then struggled through offensive slumps in the second and third periods before making some adjustments and coming away with a 62-43 win over the Lady Briar Jumpers in the first round of the tournament Thursday at Pulaski County High School. “I talk to the girls all the time about a game being a lot like a puzzle, and that if the pieces don't fit together it makes things ugly,” Lincoln coach Cassandra McWhorter said.

STANFORD - Free throw shooting wasn't the only thing that hurt Boyle County, but in a one-point game, it was the most obvious. The Rebels had been reliable at the foul line all season, but they paid a dear price for missing most of their free throws Tuesday night. One free throw near the end of the game stood out, but any one or two shots prior to that might have made a difference in Boyle's 51-50 loss to Somerset in the boys 12th Region Tournament at Lincoln County. Boyle came into the regional with an area-best free-throw percentage of .733, and all five of its starters were shooting 60 percent or better.
