If by chance a puff of smoke had risen from the Danville practice field earlier this week, it would have been a sign that the Admirals are moving on. Their untimely loss to Somerset last week might well cost them a district title, but coach Sam Harp said it shouldn't derail a season in which there is much that can still be accomplished. And Harp said it's time to put last week's game in the past and focus on the three remaining regular-season games, including the first of two critical district games Friday at Middlesboro.

Danville lost a key Class AA district football game to Somerset on Friday 24-7. However, the Admirals certainly made a fan in Somerset High School principal Wesley Cornett for the way they responded after two Somerset starters were seriously injured in a car accident Thursday night. “I had heard while I was at the hospital (in Lexington) that night and then at school on Friday that many of the (Danville) football players had called, texted or tweeted their concerns and care about what had happened and talked just as two human beings instead of intense rivals,” said Cornett.

After watching Somerset beat his team for a fifth straight time in dominating fashion, Danville coach Sam Harp chose his words carefully. The Admirals lost 24-7 to the Briar Jumpers on Friday at Admiral Stadium in a one-sided battle between district rivals ranked second and third in Class AA. “We are better than we showed, but now we have to prove it,” Harp said. “They made us look bad, but we also kind of aided that. We have a good football team when we play on all cylinders, which we didn't do tonight.

Sam Harp said open dates aren't always beneficial, but he's pretty sure this one has done Danville some good. The Admirals are just over halfway through their regular-season schedule and facing their biggest game to date Friday against Somerset, and their coach said he thinks they could benefit from the down time they had last week. While Somerset was slogging through the mud toward a loss last week, Danville was taking advantage of the one and only empty space on its schedule to rest and retool in advance of this critical district game at Admiral Stadium.

It was lack of offense that led to East Jessamine's 20-6 demise against Somerset in the season opener Friday. The Jaguars collected only 90 total yards against the Briar Jumpers. East's “run first” offense had 6 yards. After trading punts in the first quarter, Somerset found a hole in East's defense early in the second quarter. Briar Jumper quarterback Tanner Gadberry scored on a 2-yard touchdown run capping a seven-play, 44-yard drive. A couple of penalties killed East's next drive, but the Jaguars were able to figure some things out before the half.
