"Running Scared," Paul Walker's second starring vehicle in as many weeks, is an over-stuffed bag of cinematic excess, both stylistically and storytelling-wise. To call the film over-the-top would be an insult to the filmmakers, as they aspire - and succeed - in creating a movie that goes far beyond that. Oddly enough, the movie is fun in its own absurd way. "Running Scared" is not a good movie necessarily, but its acknowledgment of its overblown nature makes it entertaining in its own kooky way. The plot is convoluted to the extreme and to write a complete synopsis would be a laughable task.

Dear Editor, As a yearly Great American Brass Band Festival goer, I wish to extend my sincere gratitude and heartfelt thanks to all of you in Danville and surrounding areas who make it the success it is. I missed only the first year. To me my time in Danville is not just an event but an experience. My sister Kay has kept us hopping over the years and we have always taken in the tea, and I go to the band history conference. The gallery hop has become another favorite to look forward to. Then of course there are the friends in Danville, new friends from Virginia, South Carolina, and elsewhere.

Several local parks have received facelifts over the years, but one Winchester park soon will get a splash of color and another will be a little brighter. Heritage Park on West Washington Street will receive a new green-and-yellow sign, the Parks and Recreation Board decided Monday at its meeting. Two stone columns will hold up the sign, which will read "Heritage Park" in yellow letters and will sit at the park's entrance. The project costs about $2,500. The board also decided to open its wallet for some new lights in Lykins Park's basketball and tennis courts.

What happens when a doctor catches a sea-maiden and brings her back to his apartment? Such is the scenario in “Miranda: The Catch of the Day,” which goes up this week at Pioneer Playhouse. Director Homer Tracy says the mermaid in question casts a spell on three different men in the play. The comedy is reminiscent of the popular movie “Splash,” except for the fact that the doctor who brings the mermaid home has a wife who is not terribly excited by her husband’s “surprise” guest.

This is part two of three on live Linux distributions that I've been testing out. The second live CD distro I tested was PCLinuxOS Preview .91. This distro is referred to as being "Desktop Ready Software. " Keep in mind this is Beta software, so it's still a work in progress. Therefore, glitches and bugs should be expected. For the optimal experience, the recommended amount of memory to run this OS is 256MB. Pop the live CD into your CDROM drive and you are greeted with access information for two accounts.

Samantha Coppedge just turned 7, but instead of presents, the only thing she wanted for her birthday was to help out the animals in need at her local shelter. With the help of her parents, Laurence and Jessica, she contacted the director of the newly built Jessamine County Animal Shelter, Mike Cassidy. Together they planned a birthday party where the guests brought donations of toys and bags of animal food instead of the traditional presents. “I just wanted to do something to help the puppies and kittens that don't have a home,” the birthday girl said.

The sun held off just long enough to make Stanford's Earth Day ceremony an interesting eco-challenge Thursday: Dodge the pending floodwaters as you speak above the pounding rain, and of course, try to avoid impaling your neighbor with the umbrella. Sheets of rain pounded the green tent as city officials gathered by the swollen St. Asaph's Creek to celebrate the dedication of 16 new trees. The native trees were purchased by residents in honor or memory of family members and soon will be marked with plaques bearing their names.

I never volunteer. My father warned me not to when I left for the service. Boy was he right. But I make an exception once a year when the Kentucky High School Journalism Contest rolls around. This is the second straight year I've volunteered to judge the contest, sponsored by the Kentucky Press Association, and I hope to do so again for many years to come. Joining me in judging this year was Michael Broihier, my colleague at The Interior Journal. Michael and I left the conference room of Kentucky Educational Television, where the judging took place, impressed with the quality of the students' work.
