Bettye Long, Eunice Pence and Joan Smith of Stanford attended the Fall Appreciation and Scholarship Recognition Luncheon at Lindsey Wilson College held on Oct. 5. Dr. William T. Lucky, Jr., president of the college, gave comments on the growth of the college since he became president in 1998. The Lincoln County Education Fund, Inc. supports two students at Lindsey Wilson, Brettany Creech and Patsy Richards.

STANFORD - With the prospect of factory layoffs threatening Stanford's potential tax revenues next year, Mayor Bill Miracle says he wants to start a discussion about merging the Stanford arts program and the county's tourism program. Such a merger could save money and provide a more robust arts program for the whole area, he said. Miracle said Monday there is "a strong potential of more layoffs" at a manufacturing company within Stanford's city limits, but he declined to specify which company.

CRAB ORCHARD - A man was flown to University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center after he was struck by a vehicle Thursday night. Bobby Deaton, 28, of Stanford, was injured after he got out of a car being driven by Samantha Stewart, 19, of Crab Orchard. Stewart told Garrard County Sheriff's Deputies that Deaton jumped onto the hood of Stewart's car, breaking the windshield.  The incident is under investigation.

STANFORD - A Stanford man was arrested for theft Tuesday after police said a "good samaritan" restrained the suspect until law enforcement could arrive on the scene. Cody Griffith, 18, of Stanford, has been charged with theft by unlawful taking, third-degree criminal trespassing and menacing after allegedly trying to steal cash from a Dodge pickup truck on Arrowhead Trail at about 2 a.m. A second suspect in the case is still at-large. Stanford police officer Preston Middleton said Chris Hansford had come out of his house in the early morning hours to let his dog out and noticed a man on a bicycle just up the road from his house.

LANCASTER - A Garrard County grand jury has indicted a Stanford man on charges that he twice forced a woman to have sex with him. Jordan Floyd, 23, of 3345 Wilderness Road, was indicted on two counts of first-degree rape for allegedly using forcible compulsion to engage in sexual intercourse with a woman on two separate occasions between March and August 2012. Bond was set at $50,000. Trooper Rodney Wren testified before the grand jury. The Garrard County grand jury also indicted seven others from Lincoln County: • Jimmy Helton, 22, Cody Helton, 21, Patrick Bullen, 20, and Brittany Fowler, 20, all of Crab Orchard, were indicted on two counts of theft for allegedly taking property belonging to Randall Jordan on March 13. Jimmy Helton and Cody Helton also were indicted for being persistent felony offenders.

STANFORD - Seven Lincoln County residents have been arrested on charges they were baking methamphetamine in a Logan Avenue house. Six people were arrested Saturday night, after Lincoln sheriff's deputies surrounded the home in downtown Stanford. Deputies were initially attempting to arrest Crab Orchard resident Edward T. Jolly, 31, who was wanted for a parole violation in Arkansas, Sheriff Curt Folger said. When Deputy Ryan Kirkpatrick approached the front door, Stanford resident Daren Walls, 31, fled out the back of the building, Folger said.

STANFORD - Roughly one-fourth of the employees at a major Lincoln County employer will be losing their jobs, but local officials say rumors the company is leaving Lincoln County are false. Economic Development Director Matt Belcher said Affinia Brake Parts Inc. will be reducing the workforce at its Stanford factory by 75. BPI announced in late October it was planning "permanent employment separations" beginning Dec. 28, but did not provide a number at that time. BPI currently employs around 300 people.

STANFORD - A Stanford man with a history of running from police was arrested Wednesday after allegedly stealing a car, leading a high-speed pursuit across Lincoln County and getting into a scuffle with a deputy sheriff. Kevin Higgins, 27, faces a multitude of charges, including auto theft, fleeing or evading police, reckless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, second-degree assault of a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest. Police think he may have also committed a pair of burglaries in Stanford prior to the alleged car theft and pursuit.
