Cedric Geouge is not the typical Eagle Scout. In September 2007, the then-17-year-old Geouge was a college freshman who had just returned from a Boy Scout trip to England. He was almost ready to have his Eagle Scout project approved and completed when he was hospitalized in October with a heart infection. Following emergency surgery, he had a stroke with massive bleeding that left him severely paralyzed and caused brain damage, leaving him unable to speak. After spending five months at different hospitals, he was released to come home in March 2008.

Kevin Lawson withstood the heat of 90+ degree temperatures and the heat of his competition to claim a third Homer Profitt Memorial Invitational title at Dix River Country Club Sunday. The Mt. Sterling golfer, who finished third last year, put together two strong days of play to regain the title, shooting a 7-under-par 135 (66-69) for a two-stroke victory. “I played really solid,” said Lawson. “I made one bogey in two days. I bogeyed 13 today but, other than that, I played about as good as I can play.

BURNSIDE – Lincoln County High School senior Korey Coleman saw her high school golf career come to a close Monday at Burnside. Coleman, an eight-year member of the team, shot an 85 to lead Lincoln in the Girls’ Region 9 Golf Tournament at General Burnside Island State Park, but it would not be enough to earn the Lady Pat golfer a return trip to state as she missed the cut by one stroke. “I know she’s disappointed and I’m disappointed for her,” said Lincoln assistant coach Kevin Bandura.

I just must share something very special with you. I have experienced what could be called a "defining moment" and the utter and simple joy of it brought tears to my eyes. After about a month off from physical therapy at Drayers, I felt all my hard work there for eight months was lessening. You'd be amazed at how good it is for your body to exercise correctly -under supervision - 2 1/2 hours every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Your aches and pains get better, your stamina increases and even your attitude about the importance of it all gives you the determination to work at it. So, the realization I was back sliding - plus new hip and knee pain - sent me right back to Drayers - something I was delighted to do. Most of my recent problems stemmed from having a stroke a year ago this month.

Dear Editor, With a stroke of pen, one of our leaders can indebt the entire nation and generations to come. With a stroke of a pen, he can have me thrown in jail for my beliefs. With a stroke of a pen, he can send me to war. With a stroke of a pen, he can take my money. The relationship between him and his ink of judgment is detrimental to my life, your life and the next generation's life. He can do any of these actions with a big silly grin on his face and wouldn't feel a thing.

Neither overcast skies nor rain could dampen Kevin Lawson's spirits as he neared the finish of his first Homer Profitt Invitational win. A succession of 25 pars and eight birdies, with just one bogey thrown in, had the Stanton golfer smiling and feeling confident in his play, sitting three strokes in front at 7-under-par as he approached the final two holes at Dix River Country Club Sunday. But Lawson would endure a rather shaky and wet finish to the 36-hole tournament. As he approached the 17th tee, the clouds that had loomed all day Sunday, unleashed a downpour.

LEXINGTON - Kyle Wiltjer doesn't mind starting. He also doesn't mind coming off the bench. Either way, he just wants to contribute to his team's success on the court. In a last-minute change of plans, Kentucky coach John Calipari opted against starting Wiltjer against Lipscomb on Saturday, and the sophomore guard delivered. Wiltjer recorded his first career collegiate double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds in the Wildcats' 88-50 rout at Rupp Arena. It was Wiltjer's second 20-point game this season and the third of his career.

STANFORD - There may be better days ahead for the Lincoln County boys golf team, but Tuesday wasn't such a bad day. Sure, the scores could have been lower, and the Patriots believe they will be in time. But those scores were good enough to give the Patriots their first win of the young season, a nine-stroke victory over Boyle County at Dix River Country Club. “I think our best is still yet to come,” coach David Ledford said. “We'll feel like we're playing pretty good if we're down in the low 160s.
