Local firefighters and emergency medical personnel had a busy day with two back-to-back structure fires at a Danville townhouse complex Sunday. Firefighters said the fires at Charleston Greene on Walnut Street are believed to be related but have two different points of origin. Danville Fire Department first responded to unit 18A owned by Jenny Jackson about 6 a.m. where crews searched for anyone possibly still inside. Heavy smoke hindered firefighters, but they learned no one was inside.

WINCHESTER POLICE Charged - Jordan Roy Dickens, 22, was charged Wednesday with first-degree possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, tampering with physical evidence and was served two warrants. Reports - At 1:46 p.m. Wednesday, officers were called to 21 Waveland Ave. for a theft. - At 8:41 p.m. Wednesday, officers were called to Walmart after fishing poles were taken from a pickup truck. - At 9:13 p.m. Wednesday, officers were called to 10 Kentucky St. after a truck threw gravel all over the caller's vehicle.

PERRYVILLE - Crews were called to a structure fire at about 5:40 on Wednesday night in a vacant house on Webster Road southeast of Perryville. The fire began in the rear of the house and had not yet spread to the rest when crews arrived. While the cause is unknown, it is not considered suspicious. According to Boyle County Assistant Fire Chief James Coffman, the department will still investigate, as they do with every fire. "We have a really good investigation team. Fortunately, we don't have a lot of fires in the county.

HARRODSBURG - A man was taken to the hospital after a fire early this morning heavily damaged a duplex in Mercer County. About 5:15 a.m., Harrodsburg Fire Department responded to a duplex on Greenbriar Drive for a structure fire. Assistant Fire Chief Rick Maxfield said the right unit of the duplex caught fire, and the cause was likely electrical. The occupant of the duplex awoke about 5 a.m. and realized his mattress was on fire, Maxfield said. The man attempted to remove the bed from the house, but the fire spread.

Former Jessamine County fire chief Mike Wheeler and firefighter Cecil Fain would never have believed hundreds of people would congregate in their honor, said Cecil's brother, Doug Fain. “They would be amazed,” Fain said, looking around at the swarm of family, friends, firefighters and elected officials who packed the Jessamine County Fire District's Station No. 1 on Saturday. “They would never believe this,” he said. “They were humble like that.” The two men were killed instantly Jan. 2, 1993, when their fire truck overturned while they were returning from a structure fire.

A Jessamine County fire chief and firefighter who lost their lives in an accident were honored Wednesday with a bell ringing at the Jessamine County Courthouse, and will be honored again Saturday at a remembrance ceremony. Wednesday was the 20th anniversary of the accident in which Fire Chief Mike Wheeler, 37, and firefighter Cecil Allan Fain, 27, were killed. At least 20 people crowded into the courtroom hall as Wheeler's widow, Brenda Wheeler, and son, Gerald Wheeler, and Fain's mother, Ruth Ann Fain, and brother, Doug Fain, each rang the bell 10 times.
