If your 6-, 7- or 8-year old is ready for an overnight 4-H camping experience then Camp Cloverbud may be the place to start. Camp Cloverbud is specifically designed for campers (and parents) who are not yet ready for a full week of a residential camping experience. The length of stay is shorter (two nights and three days) and the staff to camper ratio is greater. Campers still participate in all the traditional camp activities offered at 4-H camp including canoeing, swimming, archery, nature and recreation, as well as a host of fun nighttime activities.

One of our most popular activities, 4-H summer camp, is enrolling now. July 8-11, we will be taking about 100 local youth to Boyle County 4-H summer camp at the J.M. Feltner 4-H Camp near London, along with other 4-H'ers from Lincoln and Powell counties. The deadline is June 14, but we've already filled about 25 percent of our beds. Our theme this year is “4-H University” and activities, costume and decoration contests will feature campus highlights such as Greek life, Game Day, a Toga Party, Rush and even Formal.

The quiet of summer after commencement at Asbury University won't last long - the school is launching a program of eight residential camps for high-schoolers in early June. Asbury piloted the idea last year with a couple film camps. This year, it has added a broad sampling of other offerings and branded the program “ImpactU.” “We want to serve the community and then also give high-school students an opportunity to experience Asbury in a residential setting and get a little taste of different majors and focuses,” said Mark Troyer, Asbury's vice president for enrollment management.

After three coaches in as many years, the eighth-grade cheerleaders at West Jessamine Middle School are settling into a comfortable routine with their new leader - and it has already shown with success at a summer camp. Kristin Williams took the reins of the program after the previous coach resigned in May. Williams, who cheered in Jessamine County schools before the East-West split, was encouraged to apply by her niece, a West Middle cheerleader. “I have two boys - a 14-year-old and a 1-year-old - so I wasn't really into the girls' stuff,” Williams said.

Last year's Winchester-Clark County Parks and Recreation Department's summer day camp was a big success with more than 60 children showing up each day. When this year's camp opened Monday, parks officials thought there would be some increase in attendance - and they were right. A record 134 “very excited” kids showed up at College Park ready for a fun filled summer, Parks Board Chairman Charlie Eury said Monday. “We had 166 pre-register, but we had way more than we anticipated show up this morning,” Eury said at the board meeting.
