LEXINGTON - Kentucky freshman forward Patrick Patterson is recovering from surgery on his injured left ankle. Patterson had surgery to stabilize a stress fracture on the ankle in Charlotte, N.C., last week. Doctors say Patterson will be in a cast and crutches for up to six weeks and likely won't be fully healed for four to six months. Patterson was one of the few constants this season for the Wildcats, averaging 16.4 points and 7.7 rebounds in 25 games before being ruled out for the season in late-February.

Dear Editor, I was the victim of a hit and run while I was walking my dog back on Nov. 2, 2007, and have had to have surgery and six months of therapy. I have been to court several times and testified twice. I have pictures of the bruises on me and have been on crutches and now a cane and had surgery. Yet the accused still is free. If that would have been me, Lincoln County officers would still have me in jail. I was three feet off the road and was left like some kind of animal.

I believe my mom, Brenda Rentas, deserves a little pampering because she has lost more than 250 pounds and looks like a different person. Since she has lost the weight she can do more things and can even get clothes better now. She still has to have surgery to remove the excess fat but even now she looks different. She also deserves some pampering because she is always taking care of someone. My brother got sick in 1998 and had heart failure eight times in two years. He has had surgery about three times.

The McDowell House and Apothecary Shop on South Second Street is a monument to Dr. Ephraim McDowell and the early 19th century in which he performed ground-breaking surgery. But assistant director and longtime tour guide Alberta Moynahan likes to breathe life into the house and the history that surrounds it. She tries to keep the house and the history alive by not just talking about them to tourists but by still learning about them as a student who never wants to graduate. Moynahan has told the famous tale of McDowell's groundbreaking 1809 ovarian tumor removal thousands of times.
