The GTE/Sylvania/Osram retirees met March 13 for lunch at Taste of China Buffet on the Bypass. Attending were McKenley Miller, Mary Lou Dinsmore, Jon Vickery, Virginia Combs, Garnetta Parker, Betty King, Barbara Elkin, Betty Brooks, Faye Hulette, Salley Moberly, Mae Epperson, Fay Hubbard and Lovern Rogers.

HILLSBORO, N.H. - Lisa Duncan, RN, of Salvisa, a night shift nurse at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Lexington, was named one of four finalists in the Osram Sylvania SilverStar Night Shift Hero program. Duncan, whose husband Jeffrey nominated her for the honor, works in the Intensive Care Unit tending to veterans in very serious condition, including those who served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. "Sometimes we forget about the people in our communities who make sure that important services are available around the clock," said Lorrie Piper, marketing communications manager, "That's why Sylvania created this award to honor and shine a public spotlight on extraordinary people who work at night.

Sylvania retirees meeting Thursday Winchester GTE/Sylvania/Osram retirees will meet for lunch at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Jade Garden in the Winchester Kroger Plaza. All Sylvania retirees and former employees are invited. Farris is guest speaker at Kiwanis Dr. Elaine Farris, superintendent of Clark County Public Schools, will speak at Wednesday's luncheon meeting of the Winchester Kiwanis Club at Taste of China. Betty Berryman will be program chair. Clark Republicans meeting Saturday The monthly meeting of Republicans will be at 9 a.m. Nov. 3 at the Steakhouse on Lexington Avenue.

Dr. Steve Dotson will be program chair. Open house date changed The open house at Winter Cottage at 208 Old Garden Court has been moved to Feb. 17. The event runs from 2 to 4 p.m. Homemade bread and hot chocolate will be served. Sylvania retirees to meet Winchester GTE/Sylvania/Osram/UAW retirees will meet at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Union Hall.

LODGES HOST FISH FRY Golden Link Temple No. 123 and Shackelford Lodge No. 66 will host a fish fry on the first and third Friday of each month at the Allen Chapel C.M.E. Church Center, North Highland Street, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Proceeds will be used to fund the education program and community activities of the lodges. The dates for the remainder of the year are Dec. 1 and Dec. 15. CLARIFICATIONS Only the UAW 1608 Osram/Sylvania retirees meeting normally on Tuesday, Dec. 12, has been postponed due to conflict with the event that morning at the manufacturing plant for all retirees.

Nov. 21, 1987 Former Clark coach Letcher Norton was among the 26 inducted into the Kentucky High School Athletic Association's Hall of Fame Friday. Norton won more than 600 games, including the 1951 state title at Clark County. “Twelve Reasons Why Women Fail” was the topic of a presentation by Nancy Skiba at the Nov. 10 dinner meeting of the Altrusa Club at Bud's Beef 'n More. Mrs. Skiba, human resources director-G.T.E. Sylvania, was introduced by Betty Berryman, program chairman.

Annette “Ann” Duff Combs, 75, of Winchester, wife of Carl Combs, passed away on Sat., May 11, 2013, at her home after a long illness. Mrs. Combs was born in Owsley County, Ky., on Feb. 4, 1938, to the late George and Edna Moore Duff. She was retired from Sylvania. She was a homemaker and enjoyed making crafts and sewing. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, George Kevin Combs (Trina); her daughter-in-law, Lisa Combs Soto; three grandchildren, Carl Keith Combs Jr. (Kim)

Vickie Ellen Tipton, 61 of Winchester, wife of Robert L. Tipton, passed away on Fri., Feb. 1, 2013, at the Clark Regional Medical Center.  Mrs. Tipton was born in Richmond on March 11, 1951, to Erma Hampton Patrick and the late Marvin Patrick.  She was retired from Sylvania and was a member of the Central Baptist Church. In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by her son, Ike Tipton of Winchester; her daughter, Allie Tipton of Winchester; and her brother, Tim (Rosanne)

James H. Gregory, 90, of Winchester, husband for 60 years to Eileen Ferrell Gregory, passed away Friday at the Clark Regional Medical Center.  A native of Gadsden, Ala., he was born Sept. 21, 1921, to the late Harvey L. and Charthline Riley Gregory.  He retired from Sylvania after 40 years of service, he was a United States Marine Corps veteran serving during World War II and member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church.  In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter-in-law, Sandra Gregory; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Emma Dora Fuller Hunter, 80, of Winchester passed away on Fri., Aug. 12, 2011, at the Fountain Circle Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Clark County on June 26, 1931, to the late Earl and Clara Howard Fuller. She was a retired factory worker at Sylvania and a member of the Grace Baptist Church. Survivors include three children, Debbie Hunter of Louisville, Jimmy (Connie) Hunter of Winchester, and Donald (Jo) Hunter of Winchester; five grandchildren, Darla Martin, Jimmy Ray Hunter, David Hunter, Scott Hunter, and Colby Noland; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert (Shirley)

Winchester GTE/Sylvania/Osram/UAW retirees met June 14 for their monthly meeting and then traveled to Ryan's in Richmond for lunch. Attending were members Sallie Moberlie, Rose Mary Keller, Lenora Adams, Anne Berry, Mae Epperson, Garnetta Parker, Faye Hulette, Sally McVey and Vinnie Blakemore, along with guests Ronnie Blakemore, McKinley Miller and Jon Vickery.  The retirees will meet  July 12 at 11 a.m. at the Union Hall, then gather at Hall’s on the River for lunch.

With funding for transportation and lunch provided a School-To-Careers mini-grant from Community Education, 21 students from Rebecca Ison's chemistry and AP chemistry classes visited OSRAM Sylvania in Versailles on May 20. The plant makes glass tubing for fluorescent light bulbs.  Students toured the plant and learned the chemistry of making glass and were able to see the process. Employees Carolyn Carrus, Dave Burge, Cindy Sandefer, Tom Hoffman, John Cory, and Bobby Thomas provided information on their various areas of expertise.
